Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Question Is it possible for a WHOIS to be wrong?

I seriously wanna fuckin' believe that the IP I WHOISed returned the wrong result. From my experience, I know that whois.sc is never wrong and always returned accurate details, at least disclosing the state the IP belongs to, if not city.

So, is there a possibility that whois.sc was faulty this time? I want so much to believe it was, 'cuz the person I'm talkin' about must NOT live in my area otherwise someone else I know may end up in a wheelchair and at the worst: be fragged.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, whois just tells you what the person registered the website as. He could have lied, all you need to have true is the credit card info.

The WHOIS query should bring up the info of the user's ISP if they are a home user (i.e. not on a leased line at an office/school).

ISPs may have subscribers all across any given country (AOL, for example), and they could all return the details of AOL itself; all giving a location of AOL's main offices of wherever they coordinate things from.

In other words, don't trust the location it gives you. I know my WHOIS doesn't even come close to locating me.

By the way, I got the phone number of this guy too. Would it be possible to do a trace?

If you have his phone number, that is a hell of a lot easier to trace then a ip number. Just go to yellowbook.com and choose "reverse lookup" and it will tell you a lot about him.
As for the whois search, if just whois'd my self and it said I live in Virginia. I live in south Mississippi.

Also, if his ISP connects him through a proxy, it will reveal the location of the proxy and not his computer. I live in Massachusetts but the proxy I connect to is in Connecticut.

IIRC, this is the same "phone trace" porno site posted in IFIOTW. I'm not clicking it to find out.

Yup, it's a shock-site. Pretty funny IMO.
