Re: Which tv??
T&T.
I'll say LCD and look out for HDTV. Since you're in Europe, I'm not sure how the whole HDTV thing is playing out, but if it's anything like America, it might be in your interests to start looking in that direction.

Re: Which tv??
Samsung makes awesome TVs.
I just bought a Sony Wega 34" CRT TV and as far as blacklevel and picture clarity goes, it pwns any flatpanel.
It's also 200 pounds...

Re: Which tv??
Sony and samsung are probably best if you are looking at the 46" 1080p screens (both use the same panel...produced by samsung). Westinghouse is probably the best cost/performance screen, significantly cheaper but not quite as good. For 1500 you can afford the higher quality.
This is according to what I have read and heard.

Re: Which tv??
Big screens are out for me, due to 1) low income and 2) I live in a cabin that is about 3x4 meters inside--there isn't enough clear floor space to spread a beach towel out on.
But I did manage to squeeze in a Sylvania 26" HD ATSC/NTSC LCD, and I am very happy with it. (1000:1 contrast ratio, 8 millisecond response time). Lists at $799.99, I got it for $429.
If I had a grand to spend (and more room), I'd go for a 32" Phillips.

Re: Which tv??
phillips, LG, sony & samsung are realy the only contenders for LCD screens obviously excluding the specialised companies that are like 5K +
but personally I would go for the New and do make sure it is the new model, samsung 40" LCD as it now supports 1080P inputs so perfect for your 360 elite, or PS3
the samsung picture quality is undoutably the best for its price.
the only other consideration is to go with a backlight unless you have a perfectly white back ground to put it on or at worst light cream it will not work properly, but I realy did consider getting one the differnce they make is pretty vast.
