"mount a grotesquely unsophisticated attack"
Hot damn, that's the story of my life.

Re: Whos been threatening satellites, lol?
That's a fucking retarded line, "Grotesquely unsophisticated attack". Seriously, nobody's going to hook up a garden cart to the back of their car to pull it around if they can pull it with their arms. It's impractical, costly, and more difficult to use a car. So why would someone launch a missile the size of the sears tower to take down a satellite if they could do it with an 'intermediate range missile', would they do it just to be sophisticated and dramatic? What's so "grotesque" about not over engineering?
Anyways, who's up for a summer project?
And fuck NOD, and for that matter GDI!
The allied forces shall conquer, our impenetrable forts are guarded by grand cannons and prism towers!

DAMN IT I miss that game! The allied cd exploded in the drive, soviet disk got broke somehow, and Yuri got scratched.
ahhah.... My base walls were MADE of grand cannons on online mode... No one could touch the French (Wasn't it the French that had the grand cannon?)

Why not just take over it over with a brute force attack?

Accuracy and elegance are not issues in carrying out a satellite attack, the researchers say, as long as the projectile hits the satellite.
|
Um, I think you'd have to be pretty accurate to hit something that small that far away. As for elegance, you'd pretty much have to use fancy electronics for a guidance system.
Depending how far away it is, you might be able to mount a wireless camera on it and detonate when it's close to the satellite. The satellites might not reflect enough light, so you might have to go for radar.
Once the satellite is spotted, quickly press the trigger to detonate a big explosive surrounded by thousands of ball bearings for shrapnel. With luck, enough spheres will hit fast enough to either damage it or knock it out of orbit. Maybe make the shrapnel itself explosive as a kind of MIRV.
Or attack #2: have it launch a giant sheet of metalized mylar. It will entangle itself on the satellite, blocking sunlight and possibly radio transmissions, or maybe shorting something out. Or maybe coat the sheet with acids and oxidizers to corrode it. So many possibilities...
It would be so much fun to watch satellite TV suddenly go blank. Do it during a major sporting event for even more fun. Too bad geostationaries are the hardest targets...

What if you used an explosively-pumped flux compression generator? Just get the rocket somewhere near it and thumb the button. The waves would transmit easily enough, so it wouldn't have to be super-accurate.
Are satellites hardened? I'd expect so, in lieu of an ionosphere. Would they be hardened to the sort of extent to withstand a multi-terawatt wide-spectrum omnidirectional spray of EM death?

Re: Whos been threatening satellites, lol?
The TOTSE army should try this
But as Spatula Tzar said, umm that's hard to hit a small thing from far away...
