Default the first "The Punisher"

A version of this came out in 1989 starring Dolph Lundgren as the titular hero, Lou Gossett, Jr., as his ex-partner, and I think it is in many ways superior to the new version.

For one thing, Lundgren's wooden acting style is appropriate for a hero who has been rendered inartculate by grief and rage, and the film has a moere comic book "feel"--such as the character of the drunk actor.

I welcome opinions from others who have seen both, and who generally love the subgenre of "comic book movies."

I have been meaning to rent this one. It looks alot more true to the comic book then the newer version. The new one was like watching somebody wipe their ass with a stack of Punisher comics and then framing it.

The old one is way better. It really captured the badass feel of the comics.

Doesn't David Hasselhoff play Nick Fury in the old one? It's gotta be worth seeing for that alone.

nah, that was a tv movie.

The Lundgren Punisher is good, has a decent amount of violence, and Dolph kills several hundred people throughout the film (literally).

I don't think it was Better than the newer one, they were both good, but neither was perfect.

I like it. The atmosphere of the movie is pretty dark.

i really liked this movie,my only problem with it really was that if it had been named something different it still would have been a good movie,i am a huge fan of the comics, and it didnt really follow it at all with the exception of mob killed his family,so he goes on a rampage...in this movie they didnt even kill his family like in the comics, but it was still a enjoyable flick, plenty of action, decent dialogue, hell it has Lou Gosset JR,i own it on VHS and watch it from time to time, but i didnt like the new punisher at all...i dont know if anyone noticed or not,but the entire storyline minus the killing of his family, came from a punisher graphic novel, that was very far in the storyline, they just changed it around so that they could use it to explain his origins...they should have started from the beginning and used the original comic as a basis instead of another storyline that is several years ahead of his actual beginning.

Haven't seen it in years, but I didn't think the new one was that bad. The only part that really made me cringe was the skull-explosion at the end, it was cheest...even by comic book standards.

As for comic books turned movies, I thought A History of Violence, 300, Blade 1 & 2, Constantine, Hellboy, Sin City, and Heavy Metal were all great films.

And who could forgot Howard the Duck?

I've never seen it, but I have no doubt that you're right.

Movies nowadays suck.

Dick.

I heard the expression 'cookie cutter movies' somewhere. It pretty much sums it up. Oh, and I especially especially hate combat scenes nowadays.
