Default Meta has a problem. Lets all help.

Meta asked me in IRC to post this because...well...read on.

I'm posting this here instead of T&T on the small off-chance that there is something else going on here and I don't want the general public to know...Though I'm probably just feeling paranoid...
Last night, in the early AM, Totse suddenly stopped loading for me; I would wait and wait only to get the good old: Page Cannot be Displayed message.
At first I thought that it was just that Totse had gone down again. But when I got up today it was the same thing.
When I went to IRC I found out that I was apparently the only one who this was happening to. So I even called Comcast to see if something was going on and they said it wasn't anything on their end. I even cleared out my cookies and other tempo files to no avail - and yes, I also unplugged everything for a few minutes.
So I next tried using a proxy. Now it's been about ten years since I've had to do this and I wasn't sure what to do, so I asked for help on IRC.
And even the proxies don't quite work. Some of them loaded the first page, but then directed me to some page where they wanted money. Other ones took me to the first page and then to the forums page and even to a forum. But as soon as I tried to log in, I gave me an error or wouldn't load like when I tried without a proxy.
Finally, Thetareactor gave me the site www.proxy.og, which has a list of several servers, and I've been able to have partial luck with that. By partial luck I mean that as soon as I log in, within a few pages it stops working again.
So I ask: Is it possible someone did something to Totse - or just my account - that could be causing all of this? Or is it just my computer and I am being totally paranoid?
You'll forgive the paranoia but after having my password hacked earlier this year and all....
Now apparently I can't even post this: It tells me my post length is too short and blanked out what I wrote!

There's always the off chance that there may be an issue with Comcast routing, since you were able to gain limited access through a proxy. If you haven't already tried, you can use SSL (https://www.totse.com/) to access the site.

Public proxy servers are predominantly unreliable and insecure, so I'm not surprised that you're having difficulty getting access. If it is a problem with your connection, you can use my VPN to access the site. It will modify your routing tables so all internet traffic is encrypted and forwarded through my network.

I set up a guest account with a restricted policy, and I'll post the login information here. Only IE or Firefox on Windows is supported for installation of the client program, after which you can use any browser. Click on NetExtender to start installation. Once it's active, you can browse as normal.

https://sslvpn.ath.cx
USER: guest
PASS: password

This is just to help Meta, so I'll disable it if I see too many logins from different domains.

EDIT: also, change your password when you get a chance, just for good measure.

Sounds like a DNS problem to me.

Try using OpenDNS.

Meta has a problem

Just one?!? :O

Nah just kidding. I can't offer any advice. As sybil said it might work itself out. I've had similar issues before too if I remember correctly.

Those bitches need to get themselves some weapons.

I think it was from when you posted trying to get people to guess what 2khh4 meant or what relevance it had.

Yep. It went over the heads of most americans here -with the notable exception of people like Zok (ie people who not only speak a foreign language but have actually realised that there is a whole world beyond the US).

And yes they did get some weapons and went on a anti-man killing spree. I keep meaning to post up the clip where they fire a gun up a man's arse....all tastfully shown in glorious technicolor.

I'll give it a try, thanks. This is really getting me pissed off. Each proxy I use lasts maybe 20 minutes before it no longer connects to Totse. SO I have to keep rotating them.Do you think reinstalling Windows [2000] will help?I mean my frustration level is reaching brave new heights!

Is it possible that someone could have hacked metas account with some sort of script?

This makes me really stressy. Empathy is a whore, especially when I cant do anything to help.

Meta, would you want me to attempt to access your account from my computer?

I guess you'd be unwilling to give your password to someone you dont know so well,
but have you got someone you know better to see what's up when they try to log on with your account?

Then it would show if it was a technical thing, or something directly fuxored in your account.

Well, as I hoped, with the forums back up the problem has gone away.

I wish to thank all who tried to help me - especially toraton and Jeb.

If you can post an exact date and time I can check the logs. Chances are it's just that the system is over-loaded. Even with the separate database server the site still is heavily loaded.

Then last night a couple of indexes on the POST table got hosed up and just killed the system for a couple of hours until I could take vB off-line, then it took all night to check all of the indexes and optimize tables. Seems OK now though.

I need to add RAM to the database server and fsck the /var partition. I'll probably do that next week one night so the BBS will be offline while that happens.

Open up your command prompt (assuming you're using Windows) and type the following:

tracert totse.com

Post results.

The problem was cleared up when Totse came back. So I guess I should have closed this thread....
