trouble with newly built computer
OK so I have just finished building a computer for my aunt, and I am going to install Vista on it, the hardware exceeds all needed for Vista.
anyway so my board http://images.tigerdirect.ca/itemDetails/I69-2145/I69-2145-out2-hl.jpg
and I install everything, and it has no integrated video, so I plug the monitor into the video card I put in pop in the vista cd and turn this sucker on.
It turns on fine, no beeps so could this be because the bios is fucked up?
so I wait and my monitor is just idling, so please can someone help me out specifically with getting the video card to interface with the monitor and regarding the lack of a POST.

Re: trouble with newly built computer
You need three things to post.
Ram CPU and Video Card. I would check those first.
If not that then pull the battery and check that it is good and keep it out long enough to reset the bios.
I would check the PSU and see that it is delivering power to the MB and drives.
The Hard drive is good, right?
And make sure the monitor is good. It could be booting and the monitor does not work.
You might as well post the MB brand and your bios too. Someone will say that we need that info.
No beeps is a code for some machines that the MB is faulty.
Also a weak battery will not hold the cmos data.

ya I just finished making sure the HD was indeed turning on, video card fan goes, so I know its got power, gonna switch its PCI express slot to make sure its not the slot, and if theres no RAM I should be getting a beep code in my experience.
gonna check the battery and then switch the video card.

I hate to point out the possibly obvious, but is your system speaker connected to the motherboard correctly?

Yeah, the video card fan is run off of the power supply's 12v rail. So it is a good test.

I believe so in looking at the specs in the motherboard manual there is no jumper on the board for the speaker, however there was a picture of a 3-prong jumper on the board and it says ATX front fan, but on the board itself it is 4 pronged, as it is the only jumper besides the IEEE 1394 not used I deduced that it must be for the speaker, which has 4 holes to receive.
anyway, took out CMOS for about 2 minutes, put it back in, nothing, changed PCI express slot powered it on, nothing.
it would be a fucking shame if both the RAM sticks were bad, but I will try and find the right kind of RAM at the house and change it out.
and even if the speaker wasn't hooked up, and the BIOS wasn't fucked up wouldn't there be some display on the screen?
I guess after RAM I'll find an old video card and toss it in.

Monitor - Make sure it is working.
Be funny if the PC is posting and the monitor was not working.

Re: trouble with newly built computer
Here is a basic troubleshoot that I found. If you want to try it.
and now a basic troubleshooting for a Dead PC (No video or beep codes):
1. first thing, disconnect (or remove) all external devices such as Drives, video card, or PCI add on cards. make sure you disconnect all power to these devices and unplug from the Mobo side.
2. now power up system and see if you a beep code error.
a. if you get a beep code error, then reinstall your video card. if it does not POST, then your most likely suspect is the video card. if it does POST, then one of your Add on cards or the external drives are the problem and it is just a process of reconnecting each one at a time till you find the one that is causing the problem.
b. If you do not get a beep code, Then remove your Ram. If the system gives a beep code, then your most likely suspect is the Ram. If it does not give a beep code, then you have a bad Mobo, cpu or Power supply.
This is just a basic and simple troubleshooting procedure and 80% of the time will find what is causing the problem.

edit:and my normal comp just died, I went to compare the RAM in it, didn't work so I put it back in, start it up and it starts for a second then dies, then doesn't start anymore bad day for me and computers

Re: trouble with newly built computer
Does your vid card require a power connector that goes to your PSU? Do you have a power connector going to that eight pin molex on the top left corner of your board?
