| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Chavez creating a capitalistic boom in Venezuela
Quote:
CARACAS, Venezuela — In marathon speeches peppered with quotes from Marx and accolades to Che Guevara, President Chávez repeatedly vows to do away with capitalism in Venezuela. But it turns out that Mr. Chávez’s economic policies have been generating a boom for those most capitalist of institutions — Venezuela’s banks.
Record public spending, fueled by high oil prices, is flooding this flourishing economy with cash. Government currency controls are trapping much of that money in the country. The extra cash, in turn, is increasing consumer spending. The banks are taking advantage of that by handing out scores of loans, advertising on flashy billboards across Caracas.
And with interest rates lower than the rate of inflation, “you would be stupid not to take out a loan right now,” said Richard Francis, a director of sovereign ratings at Standard & Poor’s.
As a result, bank profits grew 33 percent last year, led by increases of more than 100 percent in credit card loans and 143 percent in automobile credit, according to Softline Consulting, a financial analysis firm here. The banking and insurance industries’ contribution to the gross domestic product rose 37 percent in 2006, the central bank said.

The irony! XD He tried to eliminate the aspects of capitalism in his country, yet somehow created an economic boom entrenched in capitalistic practices.

Chavez: The beginning of Bolivar's dream that was originally squashed through American aid to fascist dictatorships.
Speaking of socialism, I was watching the BBC (they have a nightly broadcast in the U.S.), where Bolivians were protesting the FIFA decision to not play tournaments above 2.5k meters, and half the people had red flags emblazoned with Che, what does that say about the people?

Chavez: Authoritarian socialist following the well traveled road of selling out the dreams and aspirations of the working class to secure his own grip on power.
Any boom that the capitalists are enjoying won't last long, Chavez announced at the start of May that the banking sector is one of the next things to be nationalised.

Most likely. If he is smart, he should wait until everyone has taken out loans are in debt. Then nationalize the banks with a socialized plan to pay off the debts. The people will love him for it.

What are you trying to say? I don't get it. Did you mean to be critical of Chavez's socialist policies, or what? Because I could only see success and economic prosperity from that article.
When you say "economic boom entrenched in capitalistic practices", it sounds like a bunch of "buzzwords". I say buzzwords because this string of texts has no real substance to them. What really is an "economic boom entrenced in captialistc practices"? Is this a widely understood terminology? No. It has no real meaning. I, as a reader, do not get what you are trying to convey.
So, president Chavez wants to nationalise the banking sectore. He is a true socialist, with vision, and with balls. I am gonna follow him closely. He is inspirational.

Too late. Everyone already loves him.

South America has high socialist tendencies due to its culture, and Chavez is far from totalitarian, being elected by the people. Oh, and Venezuela can have a recall election provided the signatures anytim it wants, that prevents authoritarianism. His own grip on power lol, you talk about that like it's a bad thing. It's necessary in the first stages of socialism, I know it's hard to wrap your capitalist mind around that, but Chavez needs more power if he is to fulfill the socialist dream that is held by most South Americans.
I hope Chavez succeeds, and I hope his message is spread throughout South America so it can finally become self-governed without the interference of the U.S. (i.e. Pinochet).

See this is what is wrong with this specific forum. People here expect criticism and commenting no long exists. I am just commenting on the irony of the situation. I am critical neither way about his policies or how he wants to run his country. The people voted him back in for a reason. He works for them. Its not my place to say what he is doing is wrong or right. Thats for the other asshats on this board who think they are better and smarter than others.

I merely assumed that when you claimed that his policies were ironic and contradictory that you were implying that he was a bad leader, but now I'm not sure what you meant.

Re: Chavez creating a capitalistic boom in Venezuela
The irony is correct. The contradiction, is merely a by product of his policies. Not something he actually intended to happen. Whether he is a bad leader or not, I don't know. According to his people, he seems to be a good leader. They would know better than I.
