| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

US out of the UN? Yay or Nay?
Question is as thread title states.
I'm not too fond of the UN- they claim not to be a global governing body, but then they do their best to disprove that. And when they could possibly be helpful, they are so utterly incompetent that nothing gets done (Wonder how it's going in Darfur these days, anyhow?).
It certainly seems like all the UN ever does is take up some prime property in NY and run up a hell of a lot of parking tickets. While some may talk about the benefits of a "world forum" and such, I think the UN would probably collapse- or be relegated to very minor status- if the US would withdraw. And the very nature of it's voting on key issues seems to ensure nothing ever gets done.
So, get rid of it, or stay in? What would you do if you have the choice? If you're not from the US, replace US with the country of your choice and then answer.

i was gonna bring this up, glad you mentioned it. they are trying to expand their little headquarters in nyc, destroying a public park for a building that will hold corrupt foreign bureaucrats. and youre wrong, they dont bother with parking tickets, because unlike american citizens, un reps get free parking, and if they are 'mistakenly' ticketed they dont have to pay.
i want us out of un, and un out of us. im sure third world shitholes like ghana, kenya, and bangladesh would love to have them, and it seems like those enlightened wordly europeans would love to have the un in paris or berlin. theres plenty of potential hosts for the un, but they sure as hell have overstayed their welcome here. they will be remembered as some of the rudest and most ingrateful guests the american state ever hosted.

Re: US out of the UN? Yay or Nay?
^ Good.
Stay part of the UN if we do two things - absolutely no UN resolutions will change American law and life, and we stop being the world police. All we are to the UN is the big black bouncer at the Earth Club.
If the UN needs military help, they can buy arms from nations across the globe. No more sending American troops into conflicts for someone else's sovereignty. If they want it bad enough, they'll fight for it.

Re: US out of the UN? Yay or Nay?
why should the united states be a part of it whatsoever? the un is wealth resdistribution plain and simple, and the united states really gains NOTHING from the united nations. in fact, if we pulled out, our position as world hegemon would be even more clearcut, and the united nations would be revealed as the joke that it is. without the united states validating their bullshit they are nothing.

Re: US out of the UN? Yay or Nay?
That's pretty much what I wanted to say, except there's always a benefit in being part of something, even if you don't actually DO anything.
Just stay in for shits and giggles, maybe some intel gathering or an inside look on what they're doing.. but it's not like we'll help them or care what they do. We just want to know what's going on to plan accordingly.

Hell yes. And vice-versa.
Anyone see Steven Colbert's interview with Ron Paul a couple nights ago?

Yeah, the RP interview was awesome.
As for the OP, yes, US out of UN as soon as possible. First, any UN resolutions that affect the United States should be irrelevant, because no law is higher than the Constitution, and secondly, the UN is a completely worthless sinkhole of taxpayer dollars.
