| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Should America Associate With Unsavory Nations
What I am wondering is whether or not you think it is right for America to ally with a totally fucked up nation and ignore its problems merely because it is friendly. For example, Saudi Arabia. They have endless amounts of human rights abuses and we ignore it because they are about the only middle eastern nation that is friendly with us. Should we use our influence as an ally to change those places and end the human rights abuses?

Re: Should America Associate With Unsavory Nations
The USA will do what it deems is in its best interest to do at that given moment, driven by greed and capitalist corporate manipulation.
Remember that picture of smiling Rumsfeld and Saddam?

Re: Should America Associate With Unsavory Nations
I'm a non-interventionist, unless an obvious genocide is occurring. I think America should associate itself with everyone. If we can make money of them, good. If not, who cares. It is none of our business what they do with their country as long as it seems their population is large enough to make a change within their own government as they see fit. If the people have the means and the numbers, it is up to them to determine their future.
However, if a genocide is occurring, then it is way past the point as to where the people can determine their own future. That is when intervention is almost necessary. Other than that, they do whatever the fuck they want. For example: I don't agree with having the death penalty in a country as rich and progressive as the USA. But I will be damned if the EU starts trying to intervene with our capital punishment issues. That is for us to change and not some other country(s) who think they are better than us on that issue.

NO!
We should take the advice of the founders and have peaceful relations, trade, etc. with all nations, and stay out of their affairs, avoid nation-building, etc.
The founding fathers had it right over 200 years ago, and just look where ignoring their advice has gotten us today.
Besides, the US government doesn't even obey the limits set on it by the people in the Constitution... it's a bit hypocritical for them to say they're going to end human rights abuses when they don't even recognize the rights of their citizens enumerated in the Constitution.

Re: Should America Associate With Unsavory Nations
the term "humans rights" is a huge inconsequential buzzword, since virtually no human rights charter includes provisions for ones right to defend themselves, which is undeniably the MAIN "human right."

Re: Should America Associate With Unsavory Nations
Well the US is trying hard to negotiate with Russia.
And Russia is very fucked up, you probably don't hear about it much cause Russia's fucked up-ness isn't exactly a priority for the western media atm.
But i live next to russia and since our media is kinda anti-russian then they draw a lot of attention to all the shit that's going on there.

Exactly. Trade with all, entangling alliances with none. That means no embargo on Cuba, no NATO, etc.
