Default Taking the pill.

Ok, my girlfriend wants to go on the pill. She's 16.

I was just wondering, are there any adverse effects from taking the pill at an early age? I heard some things on the grapevine about it, but i'm not sure.
Your thoughts?

Most women usually need a prescription and have check ups to make sure that the pill isn't having an adverse effect - such as making her infertile.

You need to start thinking in a different way. (http://img265.imageshack.us/my.php?image=180pxfonzieon6.jpg)

^way to use one of the scariest and a really uncommon side effect, i dont even think ive ever heard of that before.

anyway, statistics say that being on the pill for a long time may increase the chance of breast cancer, BUT a lot of health professionals think that because women have to go to the gyno so often and get check ups the cases are just found more frequently. oh, and as the commercial says, she shouldnt smoke. and because she is so young her gyno will more than likely put her on a low estrogen dose pill to keep everything hunky dory.

that being said, i have been on the pill for like 3 years, i started at 15 or 16 (it was around my birthday, so im not sure). so far im fine and pregnant free! everything has its risks, she just needs to figure out if the marginal risk of serious side effects [along with the more likely risk of annoying side effects - goggle them if you want to know] is worth the ability to have sex without a condom and not get knocked up. for me it was, for others it may not be. to each their own.

it used to be thought that the pill could cause infertility later on, but that was because it used to have much much much higher dosages of the hormones in them.

these days, it's safe to take it. there was something about it causing increased chance of breast cancer, but i think that was only in older women (ie they started with the super strong pill), and i *think* that it's been linked to reducing chances of cervical cancer.

remember though, the pill does not protect against stds.

oral: she's straight edge; she doesn't even drink.

NoSkills: Well, pretty much everyone here just got their cervical cancer shot, so that's off my mind anyhow. Also, she's a virgin, and i've never had unprotected, so std's aren't a big worry, though we'll still use condoms.

Ok, thanks for the info... I shall not object to anything then.

it's not like gaining 30lbs, it's gaining 5 or 6 at most. anyone who claims it makes them gain tonnes and tonnes is just talking shit and making an excuse for them being a fat ass.

Let me inject a hint of common sense and some paternal wisdom into this thread.

For every action there is an equal or greater opposite reaction

ANY drug/herb/medication you take for an effect will also have side effects. Thats basic human physiology 101.

The pill is very very effective at what it does, and anything that changes or influences the way your body works to that extent is going to have both positive and negative effects.

Stupid example, I'm on antibiotics at the moment . They'll probably stop the lung infection from killing me this time round. Unfortunately they also kill the 'good bacteria' which means I have the shits.

The younger you start taking something regularly and the longer you do it, the more the risks pile up.

Also remember there is a lot of financial and fem-political interest in the pill being portrayed as harmless. Also some meds only show side effects in the next generation.

Am I catholic or against the Pill? Well I agree that it has done its bit to destroy the fabric of society. But no I'm not anti as such. I just think common sense needs to kick in and for people to realise there is no such thing as a free lunch. Capish? Gonna be pay back somewhere down the line.

I often wonder if the pill is the hidden cause for a lot of female depressions/mental illnesses. No scientific evidence as far as I know but I do know that anything that effects a woman's hormones/fertility can have nasty mental repercussions.
