I was browsing through B&M and saw a thread by MongolianThroatCancer where he's bitching about Sambob... In it he says that he is preteen.

Since to be a preteen you need be under 13 - Totse's age limit - I was wondering what, if anything, needs be done about this.

We can't verify age. But I feel if he wants to play [or actually is] a preteen on Totse, that he should be banned until he is [or acts?] 13 or older. I mean, he sure acts like he's preteen, but then so do so many other users.

So - and this is mainly for Jeff - what, if anything, do we do about such cases?

BTW, the thread in question is: http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2010825

Well actually he might be under 13. He has said a few things in R&R to make me think me might be, in all seriousness.

Well in the thread he made asking that you be demodded he said that he was a preteen.

I say boot his preteen ass as I haven't seen anything useful come out of him. :D

I'm going to have to object to this. Aludin's pretty careful not to break the rules. He doesn't spam or post anything else that's forbidden. He's hostile and he trolls, but neither are ban-worthy offences. He also doesn't ever use more than one account at the same time.

I say using any of your others accounts to evade the ban you got because of spaming or trolling, is bannable offense.

Well, Aludin DOES break the rules CONSTANTLY by using SEVERAL different usernames. There are some threads in R&R in which, during the past few months, he's got posts by more than one account in a SINGLE THREAD.

Personally I don't think it matters if he's being good NOW. If he was never punished for his original offense, does that mean he should just get away with it? If he was originally banned for doing something ban-worthy, but NEVER served out his time being banned, then he is still in need of a banning.

Its like sending someone to jail for 6 months, then they break out after 2 days. Is there sentence still over 6 months later, even if they haven't spent any time in the pen? Personally I would say no, but thats just me I guess.

Aludin is not currently breaking any rules that I know of aside from using SEVERAL different accounts, although he does troll and flame and give grief to many moderators, which I think personally should count for something.

Please don't. You can't ban him permanently, because he will come back. It will cause more trouble in the long run if you ban him.

Furthermore, he isn't doing anything bad right now.

He's responsible for the scripting in SG.

So we shouldn't ban a spaming troll with multiple accounts because you fear he might cause more trouble? That's a great lesson, keep them in fear and they won't punish you.

MLOR, the AR&R community would be greatly in your debt if you banned Aludin along with the rest of his user names.

What on Earth are you talking about? These people do not speak or act on the behalf of anyone. And we surely don't have any control over them outside of our forum. We're in the same boat as every other moderator with these guys. Hell, they fuck with us even more than they fuck with the rest of you! :D

What do you expect us to do, honestly? You're the Super Mod, man. :p

It's not like we have any influence on the spammers and trolls, just because we mod one of the (many) forums that they crowd around in. And I really think it's unfair to group every poster in Half Baked together, as if everyone there is responsible for what a few dumbassed trolls do.

Also, there's a poster in GPP who keeps coming back with different names, posting a link to this scam website (PS3 only $50!!!!) and then posting a huge long list of crap.
The latest screen name was 'mdiphones' and before that 'link65'. The older ones have been 'beil123', and after that.. I dont know.

Is there any way to do an IP ban? Or else this poster is just going to keep coming back.
And it's scary, but some totseans fall for that crap and end up being scammed horribly.

I've been posting here for the better part of 4 years and have followed Aludins posts in HB, B&M, and SG since then, so pardon me if I've not been long enough to please you.

The fact of the matter is that if you're too afriad to punish a single poster because he might cause "trouble", the us new mods (and the old mods as well) will do our best to make "executive decisions".

I guess we should ignore the the fact that MomentaryLapseOfReason also agrees with him being nothing but a ban evading spammer.

But nevermind that, Aludin might be angry and cause us to actually moderate our forums

The point of moderating is to moderate. Not to jump off the deep end. Bans because of past transgressions just aren't cool.

This thread seems heavy on the Aludin hate and, while it is understandable because of what he's done in the past, as a few fine men above me have mentioned, he's not doing anything wrong now.

I mean, isn't there some sort of statute of limitations in effect? :p

If he were to start causing problems now, yes, ban his ass. But at the moment, he's not really doing anything wrong, IMO.

Granted, I don't follow the guy around and watch his posts, but if the allegations are trolling and using multiple accounts, I don't see what the big deal is, since trolling isn't against the rules, and as long as the accounts aren't being used to evade a ban, I don't think it's really that big of a deal. As Jack mentioned in a previous thread, a lot of people have and use multiple accounts, for a variety of reasons (privacy mostly). And while Aludin's pseudonyms may not be as kosher, if none of them are banned, he technically hasn't broken the rules, has he?

Plus, as Toraton stated, banning him will probably just bring him back with a vengeance, especially since he hasn't done anything. I mean, if banning a spammer occasionally brings them back fiercer, what do you think banning a mostly-innocent reformed spammer would do?

We're not omniscient, we're not omnipotent. When I got online in the morning when the spam attacks happened I spent the best part of two hours tracking down all the scripters, finding out what was going on, deleting posts and banning people before I had to go for an exam. I'm still banning multiple accounts now, because I'm not going to let these fuckers evade a ban for this after they caused me and the rest of us so much trouble. What else can I do?

The script was discovered and spread in IRC. The people who did it are a few omnipresent trolls who it's just not possible to get rid of; attempting to do so just pisses them off and they attempt to spam up the forum. Most of the HB members were helpful and supportive when I was trying to find out the usernames of all the scripters and they were just as pissed off about what happened as anybody else.

By the way, Aludin was heavily involved in the scripting attacks. Now there's a reason to ban/delete his accounts. And after I stood up for him, too.

So basically you're saying "Don't talk about it"??

Sorry, but I don't see how ignoring a problem is going to solve it. Makes no sense.

And I agree that you should not punish a user for something they were already punished for al ong time ago.

But the point is that Aludin has STILL NOT BEEN PUNISHED. If the ban wasnt a temporary ban, then it was permanent, which means he should STILL be banned. Yet he has NEVER stopped posting.

let me give an analogy. A man rapes and murders a 73 year old woman (uh ok. bad example!!). He is sent to prison for 6 life sentences. He escapes after one day in the pen.

Now.

What should the authorities do? Sure you can't CHARGE him again. But yo ucan still THROW HIM THE FUCK BACK IN THE HOLE.

I don't see how anyone can defend Aludin. If any of you would say to him "Hey aren't you supposed to be banned?", no matter how you defend him here, he's gonna say "Yeah and I came back anyway so what?? If you ban me again I'm still going to come back?"

And hasn't this guy participated in like,, serious spam before? Not just little stuff but spam attacks?

Such as what? First of all, I dont think you should assume we're stressed about this. But even if we were, I dont see how its any of your business what we personally get stressed about.

Although generally I don't buy into the idea that regulars pay so much attention to what happens between moderators and regulars, that if for example, moderators argue, it 'destablisizes the blah blah blah regular moderator blah blah blah' - you know what I'm talking about.

However a user going around saying "Keep banning me admins! I'll just come right back!"

I can't believe that the spammers, script kiddies, and people who quite frankly, are looking to cause SERIOUS trouble via totse (participating in malicious internet activities, getting drugs, organizing crime in the 'real world') don't look at Aludin saying things like that and think to themselves "Well if an idiot like that can get away with evading bans for YEARS, I'm sure I can too!"

Moderators have no real 'power'. We don't NEED it, because our job isnt that important. We close problematic threads, keep totse from getting into too much trouble, etc etc. Some moderators of course think their job is super super important, ut in the end I thin kwe all know its not. However if, when we say, close a thread a user just says "Well if they're not going to do anything to me that will actually effect whether or not I can keep posting - I guess i'll keep posting personal information,, or I guess I'll keep posting those pictures of wires being sodomized by a dog, or i'll keep posting that kiddy porn", then any kind of usefulness we have completely goes out the window.

I don't care if I'm not 'useful', but if we are NEEDED to do things, and we can't because users simply don't give a shit when we say " Please don't do that anymore", then I at least, think theres a serious problem.

Im sorry if I'm just stating the obvious, or going overboard or whatever, I'm just slightly concerned thats all.

I have to agree with wires that aludin isn't a big issue. The people that look to him as a role model have taken the reins that he once held. aludin is just in the background now. There is no problem to be seen there, unless it is created.

wires makes a good point that there are simply more important issues to be dealt with. Such as the fact that bans are no longer done on the IP level; all a user has to do is clear their cookies and register a new username.

sam made some good points on realizing that being a moderator isn't a truly significant position. You're overthinking it sam, but that's what you do.

Its just a hobby actually, just because I'm overthinking doesnt mean I necessarily care about everything I overanalyze.

Why are other users that evade bans more important than Aludin though? I just don't see how we can say "Well this guy is worse than this guy" if they're just evading bans.

You say that yo're worried about bans not really being enforced, well thats EXACTLY what i'm talking about. Those other people should be taken care of, but Aludin should be included with those other people. I don't see how we can say "Well hes not causing any problems by breaking those rules, aside from spamming, so he doesn't need to be effectively banned - but these other guys do!"

I'll be brutally truthfull. I've got a raging case of social anxiety disorder. I can barely leave the house without having a panic attack. I have no friends.
But the internet is great. It's an amazing source of communication and information for me. I can talk with people and almost feel like a real person. I can even almost make friends.
So yeah, for me the interenet is serious buisness because it is to me what you going out with your friends to a bar and having fun is.

Anyway, I posted this in Kai's thread, would this be a better way to get rid of the die hard multiple account trolls who keep coming back?

MLoR is doing Jim Dandy.

Sadly, Jim Dandy is a very fun man. Nobody else can even compete. :(

And this post is not to be construed as being rude; that is not MLoR's inention.

Taking things seriously, aka 'caring', is perfectly normal.

If you are going to try to make fun of people for tkaing things 'too seriously', then why are you even here?

When people are having a serios discussion, trying to figure things out, and all yo uhave to say is "OH YEAH THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS". ALL you are doing is flaming and insulting the people having the real conversation. Why does it bother you all so much if I take what I do seriously? I dont so anything unless Im going to do my best at it, moderating on totse is the same, what is so wrong with that?

People say all that "Der der Internet is serous business !" shit to imply that people having a PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE CONVERSATION, have no life, and should just drop the subject.

Well if you don't have anything to contribute, why are you in the thread in the first place??

If you want to discuss the topic, then discuss it, if you dont, then don't post. This is the Mods and Admins forum for fucks sake, this place is starting to look like SG!!!

In fact, its flat out rude.

I can't even tell yo how many times I've been involved ina conersation with someone, a GOOD debate or argument, and someone like Kate comes in telling us how stupid we are for arguing about soething over the internet.

Well its none of your god damn business, thats how I feel about that kind of thing.

If yo're too cool to participate in a conversation online, then don't participate! Save us all the trouble.

Sam, there's a difference between taking the internet seriously--as we as moderators should and do--and going into a pissy rant over a light-hearted (but perfectly legitimate) comment. That's taking it too seriously; try to relax. Being hostile and argumentative doesn't get you very far if you're trying to 'have a legitimate conversation'.

Wait wait wait... where have I posted in this thread until now? What does this have to do with me!

On topic: The bans needed to srsly happen. If you let one person off, what's that saying to the rest of them, that its ok to spam? That its ok to break the rules as long as you learn to evade your bans enough so that the mods and admins just give up and don't care anymore?
Think of it as quality control.

He's been banned many times before. Maybe that's what you didn't know when we discussed it earlier. You cannot permanently ban him and he causes less trouble when we try.

Here's an important question.
Does anyone here actually like aludin? Do you find he contributes anything but shit to the forums?

Or are you merely tolerating him because he keeps coming back?

If it's proven by a poster that the mods of Totse are getting fucked up the ass by a poster just because he keeps coming back, then what's that going to tell them that they can get away with?

If you really want him gone,it's going to take alot more than infractions and bans. It's going to take making him not want to come back.
If his every post was edited, if his every thread was closed, if he was shut up before he even had a chance to do much, he might get pissed off with totse and leave.

But untill people decide that's okay to do that, we;re all pretty much going to continue to get fucked up the ass by this poster just cause he keeps coming back. :(

So basically the plan is "HE is better at evading bans than we are at banning people, so lets give him and let him win."

With a super moderator or admin's blessing, I would be glad to contact his ISP (or his PARENTS) on behalf of &totse.

I'm assuming the guy is pretty young (13-16), so talking to his ISP (and therefore his parents) should stop him VERY efectively!!

He's really not old, unless I'm out of the loop and didn't know it. :p

But you're right, he actually is smart. But being smart isn't good for much if you act like a prick 99% of the time.:D Of course, he only does it to get to people, and as you can see even in this thread, he does that well. Assuming that he's just your everyday dime-a-dozen troll is mistake #1. If he gave a shit about contributing (and on the rare occasions that he is serious) he could be a good poster, IMO.

Anyway, I'm not trying to make a case in his defense. I really couldn't care less about any Alduin-drama, and I don't get anything out of his posts. Just saying, if your intention is to get rid of him, it's really going to take something more drastic than editing all of his posts, closing his threads, banning him, etc.

EDIT: In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if contacting his IP/parents didn't stop him. I think you guys may have to round up a lynch mob and find his house to completely get rid of him.

Well pardon me, but I'm pretty smart too, and if I can get the info I need, I WILL try to deal with this guy.

HEres what I need to know though:
1) Do we now his real name?
2) Do we know where he lives (just roughly)??
3) Do we know roughly who his regional ISP is ? That is if its Road Ruder, is it Western Ohio Road Runner, etc etc.

If a super mod will give me that information, or just number 3, i will take care of - with your blessing of course!

Does he have a webserver or anything like that??

If nothing else, if we know what his ISP is, we can email them saying:

"Here is the deal, a user on our website and message board has been causig MANY problems using a variety of different userames, and using a variety of different proxy servers to log onto said usernames (As he has been banned by his IP repeatedly). Do you have ay advice as far as dealing with this user?

Just a messagelike that will help. But if I can get more specifical inform I will go ALL OUT in talking to his ISP,

Goddamn I'm out of the loop. I haven't seen an aludin post in a loooooong time. Or I just haven't been wandering into the right forums. Or would that be wrong forums? Ín any case, I fully support the contacting of parents/ISP/etc. Hilarity and temporary peace shall ensue.

Don't get me wrong. I was just making a point to those who aren't familiar with him (I know AR&R gets more of his attention than most other forums, except HB)

It's certainly worth trying to contact his ISP if he's that much of a problem to everyone. Personally, he has never bothered me much. Just another internet pest, for the most part. But I can see that he annoys the hell out of many.

EDIT: And even with as long as he's gone by "Aludin" instead of "Alduin", I'll never get used to it. *Shrug* Pointless, but I just noticed that no one else seems to call him Alduin anymore. :p

Anyway, good luck with it. I think it will be tricky for you to figure out his info, though. Partly because he is a minor, and partly because he doesn't let people in on much. Not the people that will tell anyone, I mean. All I know is that he's between 15 and 17, and his name might be Chris, unless he lies about either or both. Wouldn't shock me either way. Oh, and he lives in North Carolina if I remember right (Edit: MLoR said that already). Don't know anything more specific than that.
