Default A push for new technology forums

Zok talked about this a while back in T&T, I'm bringing the issue back up.

We got two new forums, which is great. But we're still missing two: a programming forum and a troubleshooting forum. The troubleshooting forum could be a subforum of T&T, as could a programming forum.

However, I am also of the opinion that a programming forum is simply too broad to be made into a subforum. There's so many different, specialized techniques and features (COM, .NET/Mono, OS-specific development, embedded devices, etc.) and soooo many different languages that it really is in a world of its own.

Most of the users in T&T feel this is a good idea, too, as referenced by http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2013861.

Personally, I propose making a help desk subforum under T&T and a broad, zero-subforums programming forum until it starts to define itself, at which point new subforums can be created.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Realistically though, how many users can program? How much traffic would it get?

Thats the biggest problem I see with all the new technology forums. 90% of T&T was windows discussion, now its split up and the traffic to T&T is noticeably slower. If we add programming and troubleshooting forums, what will be left of T&T? What will be left of *nix? the mac forum?

As I look at T&T, there are 20 threads on the first page out of 29 that would go into a new troubleshooting or programming forum. The pattern is pretty much the same for ICFR and *nix. Would all those threads go into a new troubleshooting forum? That kind of defeats the purpose of different forums for different platforms, doesn't it?

the only way I could see this working out is if we combined *nix, COM, ICFR, and T&T into a general hardware, software, misc technology discussion forum, and then have separate forums for programming and troubleshooting.

Even then, is it THAT much better than what we had before, before cult of mac and ICFR? Never mind the cellular phone subforum (wtf?).

I think they are a good IDEA, but generally speaking I am against breaking up forums of that size.

for example when R&R was recently split into "Music Tech", we had a lot of backlash against it.

Yall obviously have some support for it, but I urge you to think about what the fate of the two or three forums you split into will be. With the split will they even have enough posts to warrant having them in the first place?

A little history lesson... I actually used to moderate T&T way back in the day with Zok, so I know the sentiment you're describing in not having specific enough forums. But now just as an outside observer, it just seems to me that its not needed. I think forums should only be split if its NEEDED. But thats just my take, and of course my opinion doesnt mean all that much anymore since I obviously no longer moderate T&T, and I dont post there either.

The thing is, I know Jeff wanted to do it, or at least that's what I heard last. He even said he wanted it split up into very detailed specifics.

The thing is, I know that if there were a programming forum, more people would be inclined to post in it, as would I.

There's room in Printed Matter for it. There's just nobody that posts about it.

Every once in a while someone posts a graphic novel thread. I've never actually read a graphic novel, but the art is impressive. I also hear quite a few good things about the plots.

I don't know about the tech forums, but I hope there's a way to hid them all under one heading, that way the main listing isn't so cluttered.

I've just recently gotten back into them (there are 2 shops near campus and one in the same complex I work at) but I've always wondered why Totse never had a section (at least in part) to it.

Also, you should read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preacher_%28comics%29) and this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Zombies)

Perhaps there's a better thread for everyone's opinion, because this isn't the right place for it.

As mod of T&T, I want Cellular Mods removed and I want "Help Desk" and "Hello World" implemented as subforums. If you view the link Trueborn posted, you'll see that the users desire this as well.

I would appreciate this to be done as soon as possible, Jeff.

Subforum or forum, I don't care. I would love to have a programming section.

Me too, and if it gets TONS of traffic, I see no reason why we shouldn't turn it into a real forum. I think Tech has enough full-on forums right now though.

Jeff, on that note, perhaps we could speak to the other tech mods about creating an Operating Systems forum and moving It Came From Redmond, Cult of Mac, and E*Nix into it as subforums? The tech section is a bit bloated and I feel that it needs to be restructured.

Bump.

Jeff, could you please read this thread and give us your thoughts?

Do you thinking these subforums would be spreading T&T too thin, or could we give it a shot?

Wait, there's a cell phone forum now??

There have been calls for a long time for BLTC to be broken into subforums. But I've always been opposed to it because I think it would totally mess up the 'flow' of things. I've seen other forums, like Pharmaopia for example. Not that I have anything against the site. Quite the contrary. I just think that the traffic there is a lot lower because it is broken down into subforums.

But I can totally see how the same would not apply to the tech forum[s] and that it might actually even increase the traffic.

I'll shut up now...

Hello World! has been created.

From the way you describe the proposed Help Desk forum it sounds like you want a place for "how do I fix my computer" -type questions. The OS-specific forums are help-desk forums for their respective operating systems. You should move iPod threads over to Cult of Mac, Vista grievances to It Came from Redmond, etc.

Which leaves general hardware-type questions. Are there really enough general hardware-type questions that they need their own sub-forum?

It's a sub-forum under T&T. I was waiting to see how much interest there was before appointing a separate moderator and splitting it off or merging it back into T&T.

Suggestions for a moderator for Cellular Mods (http://www.totse.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=197), anyone?

warweed12 or whatever his name is...if he wants it that is

Oh and I would like to see Clean tech be simply a sub forum of Green Planet if that is workable.

Sorry that is a bit off topic but I considered you'll be in here and see this anyhow.
