Question Eye contact freaks me the hell out.

Is any one else like this?

There are two types of situations I will make eye contact with someone. When I am acting agressive/staring someone down/looking for a fight, and when I'm an intimate situation with a woman.

All other social situations, I avoid it like a plague. Infact I don't even look directly at their face sometimes. Is this considered rude?

So -and yes I know it seems like really obvious common sense but for some reason I'm just oblivious to social convention- ? Small talk with shop assistans? Saying hi to someone on the street? Conversations with friends?

Help me out here.

eye contact can be v. uncomfortable. If you hold a girl's gaze for more than, say, four seconds there is almost always sexual tension (unless she's your mum or something).

One of my professors at uni always stares at whoever he's talking to and it's really weird so I always break away after a few seconds. With a man who's not a good friend, eye contact seems like an act of aggression, or at least of assertion.

Now I think about it, eye contact is really weird, especially the way your eyes kind of lock on to another set of eyes in a ways that's probably unique.

It only freaks me out if i didn't seek the contact out. I can stare people in the eyes fine, i sometimes enjoy unsettling people i dislike by merely staring into their eyes. If someone forces me to look into their eyes though, i freak the fuck out.

When I used to take a lot of acid I'd look at everybody directly in the eyes. I mean everyone. I thought I could see their souls or something and it freaked out a lot of people.

I guess that I usually maintain eye contact while talking, unless there is a more impressive sight; I know some people that feel uncomfortable to be looked at or have their eyes gazed into, so I avoid it when I'm around those people with a strength of will. I take a lot of cues from peoples eyes. I don't think about it, it's just a natural process.

People creep me out when they keep looking at my eyes when they're talking to someone else. It's just odd.

I always had this problem too. I didnt get over it until I started theatre work. It forces you to make that eye contact and nobody thinks its unusual there. Afterwards I felt very comfortable keeping that eye contact.

So if theatre is something up your alley....

seriously dude did somebody rob your account because you always seemed more secure than this with what you write. i got some form of this problem too but because i dont try to battle people with my eyes i use them casually. its kindof annoying to me when people are trying to battle me with intensity, and it happens a good amount. me winning an eye intensity battle doesn't mean shit to me. it means shit to other people tho so its probably a good skill for some of us to get up to speed on. im more into somebody expressing their intelligence than people expressing their stubbornness (or they might see it as passion). but passion and intelligence is best communicated with words (or letting me see/grab your boobies)..

But I know what you mean, me = social anxiety = no eye contact with people

eye contact during sex freaks me out. A girl did that to me once and I was like what the fuck. Like looking at my eyes instead of the semi-muscles I had at the time. So I flipped her over.

I always make eye contact with people, especially if im talking business cause i can pick up from eye motions if they are lying or unsure, even though they are trying to play it off....

And with girls if im talking to a quality one, i make eye contact like all the time....especially if im talking some serious business, can pick up on stuff and plus i like to look into their eyes...its just a must

I used to be like that but then I realised what other people think about anything is completely irrelevant so if I feel like staring into their eyes I will. I also developed a fucking death look that scares the shit out of people and I can just stare into their eye's for so long without blinking and it throws them off so to say, learned it from me ma ;)

Haha. I am secure with some things, and I'll talk give/advice on them, and on some things I look for advice.

I am entering a new phase into my life and I am trying to nut alot of things out in my head so as to have a more positive experience.

Ok, so from what I gather, eye contact during casual conversation is socially accepted and welcomed...but not for too long, break eye contact every so often, so you don't weird them out...

Is this right?

I always look people in the eye only because I know thats what I'm supposed to do. But the whole time Im thinking about how uncomfortable it is, especially if you're close because then my eyes tend to look at just one of their eyes, and then they move to the other eye or maybe their ugly hair or nose, and then I worry if the person thinks I'm judging them.

Yeah I can't look at someone in the eye without thinking "OMG I hate this"

if anything only an inferiority complex, but its more likely that they dont like you/ want to know you or even think about you. people who read as much into it as that are really fooling themselves. if somebody wants to size me up they better do more than use their pathetic eyes. confidence in stupid things can deter some people but it doesn't win battles, physical or mental. its a shallow victory if it can be considered one at all.

I like eye contact. When school was still in, I'd always look straight into people's eyes from across study hall, to observe their reactions. I just find it real interesting how nervous it makes some people. The way they act once they notice, try not to look, but keep trying to slyly look to see if you're still doing it. You know, the "I'm just goin across my whole point of view - quick glance at you" thing. Or when I notice somebody that's looking at me, I'll lock eyes with them. I'm sure I've creeped out a ton of people.

And I can never help but think that that person's entire life has been shaped by what these little soft spheres have shown them.

lol, i have fun with eye contact. i dont mind it in the least, so when there are shy people, when there is small talk, i try to drag out what im saying and keep eye contact the ENTIRE TIME. even if they point something out, i keep going. it freak people out and i laugh after i leave the room, cuz you can just tell they are uncomfortable as SHIT.

its hillarious:D

but as for other situations, with ppl i no, when they say something that makes things awkward (guys only, i dont make girls feel uncomfortable), i just stare. blank face, eyes that say "WHAT THE FUCK?!", and i hold it for 15 seconds. i count.

or when i notice people staring at me, i stare back, hoping they look away. sometimes they dont, but o well.

and when im across the hall from someone i hate... OHH, I LOVE THOSE SITUATIONS. i try to look as big as i can, get a scowl, whatever their fear is, i try to imitate it as best i can (try it, it works amazingly.
IE: fear of large people. i broaden my shoulders, get on my toes enuf to be bigger but not enuf to be noticed unless 3 inches from my feet, and just make them UNCOMFORTABLE. its so funny to watch them react. running, staring back, and screaming have been some reactions. it works best when they r alone)

its fun:D

sometimes it gets awkward for ME, like when i get bigger and stare down the hall, ppl r like "wtf u doin?"

its still fun and worth it

That's because you don't even know the real you.

I suggest completely immersing yourself in your thoughts through whatever methods available to yourself:

meditation, fasting, lots of psychedelic/dissociative drugs, sensory deprivation, sleep deprivation, isolation, strenuous exercise, etc

and remember, "Do what thou wilt is the whole of the law."

I love eye contact!

It's like the two of you are having a deep conversation without ever opening your mouth.

Fucking magic.

But yeah. It definitely can be uncomfortable if the two involved parties don't have some sort of connection... some girls just freak me out with the eye contact, so I get what you mean...

Fuck. I'm drunk. Tisn't even 2 yet. I better get pussy tonight. Better hold off on the booze for a bit...

I can't make eye contact with anyone. If the other person is trying to I usually just look at their nose. I think for me it's because I have so much to hide from everyone I talk to and am scared of anyone seeing this.

I'm pretty crap at eye contact, Rabbitoh my man, but I'm getting better. It's an easy thing to force yourself to do, I find, especially since the action itself takes little to no physical effort, only mental.

So, I've been making a concious effort to give people a bit of eye contact. Not for very long, just a brief 1-2 second look in the eyes occasionally. I feel a bit better for it actually.

Oh, and to the people who talk about staring at people to freak them out...I love it when people stare at me. I always give them a smile and a big sarcastic wink. Pisses them right off:D

Its very hard to trust someone who won't keep eye contact during a conversation. It did used to make me feel uncomfortable when I was younger, but was always told how important it was and now it's kinda drummed in there.

What do you mean by keep eye contact during a convo? for how long?

(excuse the really obvious questions but this is something i don't 'naturally' get.)

Well, basically during the whole conversation. If you were talking to two people at once, swap your eye contact roughly evenly between the two.

It's not always important. Ordering food in McDonalds, for example, but it's something Ive got into the habit of.

Say you were in a job interview. Keeping eye contact the whole time will scream confidence.

reminds me of when I was 16 -- one of those magazines for teenage girls (you know the type, pretend to be coy but essentially are cosmo for the tweeny generation) interviewed three friends of mine about sex, and a copy of the mag surfaced in school as a couple of the younger girls were reading it and recognised the boys.

Anyway, two of them kind of mumbled that they like missionary etc, played it safe, but one of them was a real character and said something along the lines of:

"I like it doggy style, avoids awkward eye contact."

Fucking incisive stuff from a 16 year old. Then our history teacher got hold of a copy and kept quoting that line to the boy the rest of the year.

Always pick one eye to look at cause if you go back and forth your eyes will look shifty. When you do break eye contact never look down away; keep them at the same level. You'll be seen as more confident, powerful and trusting.

It was never something i noticed until recently when i read something on body language and eye contact. I've been experimenting at work, since I interact with a lot of people during a day. It kind of makes you feel a little more powerful too.

Interesting stuff I wonder if it's a social conditioning kind of thing or something thats instinctual. One time when i was a kid my brother really wanted a dog so our parents took us to the pound. He got me to get really close to this one cage and stair into the dogs eyes; the thing went crazy and start barking and growling, scared the living shit out of me. To this I never look a dog in its eyes and if accidentally I do it makes me really uncomfortable.
