A Voice for Moderation
I love a good pun! Others might also find it ironic for me to be one calling for moderation in the moderation department.
Anyway, this is just a suggestion from me to the new Mods: Even though you have the ability to edit someone's post, try to avoid it unless it's really called for. I didn't always hold this view, but experience has shown me that it causes more trouble than it's worth and can even boarder on the abuse side of things if taken too far.
I still will take exception to when people say something very out of line about me or mine - or other Mods. But even then, most times I will just delete the offending text....Not always though.
One other little thingy I'd like to pass on. This is sorta an unwritten rule or guideline or a sorts....If there is a thread you feel should be locked, but another Mod from the forum has posted in it, that is kinda an indicator that the other Mod approves of the thread and so please don't close it.
Of course, if the thread has turned to shit since said Mod posted, it'd then be fair game to close.
If you see a thread that is closed and you feel rather strongly that it should be open, go ahead and reopen it, but state why you're doing so, so the other Mod doesn't feel any toes were stepped on.
When a Mod from another forum posts in one of my forums, and it is something I would normally close had it been any other user, I try to give a little extra leeway to them. But I have closed threads - not often, mind you - made by other Mods because they had no place at all in the forum.

Even then :p
anyway, I do think that this is kinda the job of the global mods such as Zok, Acidmelt, and MLoR. They have the power to look over this and they are kinda here to watch over us it be for good or bad.

Sometimes especially then.
But then if it's really really epic, well then sometimes you just got to use your best call and let the lulz fall where they may...:D

Re: A Voice for Moderation
It annoys me to no end when a mod edits posts for their own enjoyment.
Pirate Hippie used to do that, that fucktard.
But yeah, light modding is the key to SG.

I think Snoopy was the only one who could do it successfully for massive lulz.

Re: A Voice for Moderation
I'd never do it for lulz or personal satisfaction, but isnt it acceptable to edit a post if that person is seriously trying to de-reail/ruin a thread or post something seriously out of order?

Yeah, unless it is something horribly out of line, editing posts is just a no no.

Even that's borderline. I wouldn't edit any post for trying to derail a thread through flaming or stupid comments. The only times I would are when it's deliberately, personally hurtful to somebody, and only then when it's really out of line. If there's any doubt, it's best to leave it.
It's fun to do it for amusement in HB. One of the perks of modding in there.

Re: A Voice for Moderation
Mods shouldn't edit posts for lolz IMO. Just post a 'fixed' reply...that'll get as many lols.
Editing is something that should be reserved mainly for the removal of 'illegal' information (kiddy porn links, totsean's addresses etc).
If I do edit a post for any other reason (eg.abortion threads) then i'll leave a note explaining what I've edited and why, for example "I happen to agree with you said but this isn't the place for it. Leave your soap box at the door, please or post in the 'official' abortion thread" and all such threads have a warning that people need to stick very closely to the brief.

Yes, that's strictly a Half Baked thing. In HB it's expected to play with people.

Not really, no.
I mean, first of all,, if you do it to one then you'll have to do it to all that try to derail a thread and there's just too many of those in SG.
Just do what most people do: Ignore it and read the next reply. And if the thread dies get derailed, you can just close the thread if it needs it.
Again, you need to have a light touch with SG; Things you wouldn't put up with in most forums just happen to much to really do anything about it. As long as it doesn't go overboard.

I think for the first time we agree on something.
None of you, and I mean NONE of you can produce, and get away with, the types of lulz that Snoopy could produce. I've seen a couple of the new mods try, and if I see it again, maybe I'll lulz you back and edit your posts, catch my drift?

Re: A Voice for Moderation
Oh and SG mods, it would be REALLY SWELL if you posted WHY you were closing a thread.
Theres a couple of threads in SG right now that don't need to be closed (in other words, they could have been moved to OTHER forums) but since I don't know which of you dears closed them and WHY you thought you were closing them - I have no idea who's toes I may step on by moving themself.
So I'm not going to touch them.
Not only does this save me from bitching, but it also informs the regulars on where they've gone wrong, and therefore they can (hopefully) learn from that. Plus it sometimes helps eliminate threads titled 'Why was my thread closed'.

Well generally, if my post is the last post in a thread and it says something like "if you dont like it on totse, then leave!!" that might give you an indication of who closed the thread..
Out of curiosity, who stickied that official bitch at the moderators thread?
It's incredibly silly and unproductive. People arent saying why they dont like the moderators, they're just rebelling because that's what they're meant to do, being l33t anarchists and all.

Re: A Voice for Moderation
My two cents--I used to edit a lot for grammar and usage, but it just got too time-consuming.
Once in a while, I'll break up a post that is one loooong paragraph, but that's about it.

Re: A Voice for Moderation
I don't ever edit or delete anything unless it contains personal information. And trust me, every time one of you guys does it, I get an email about it and have to try and defend your actions. I don't mind doing so, because usually you guys are in the right, but I'd like to not even receive the emails in the first place, ya know?
Edit: Thanks Meta.

I dont know if you got *my* email..?
Probably amongst the hundreds of emails from totse users.
Anyhew it was regarding exactly this topic, I mean editing and moderating , not this thread !
As a super mod, do you *have* to read and respond to all emails you get?
Would it not make life alot easier to ignore the worst of them?
I've found that the more you take an active interest in peoples opinions, the more they'll drown you with them.
I used to moderate an eating disorders forum, and first of all I got complaints about a few certain posters. So I checked out the situation, sorted it out. Then I got ANOTHER list of complaints from yet another group of people about another group of people.
By giving the impression of giving a damn just that little bit too much, people thought that whining enough to me would suddenly make the world right.
I dont know if that's how it goes with you?

Re: A Voice for Moderation
I make it a point to answer all email I get - except the ones that say such things as 'Fuck you fag' or such. Not that I really get a lot, but still...
It allows people to know you are accessible and are more likely to email you than post threads asking it.
It's part of a Mods job to deal with these things as much as moderating the forum is. And it also makes people more inclined to give you some of the respect you deserve as a Mod. They - for the most part - really do appreciate the fact that you take the time to read and reply to them.
And while I know that being a Mod is not about making friends with people, it tends to make your job easier in the long run to 'cultivate' good relations with the people you moderate. Dig?

But I'm a super mod because I like helping people :) That's actually why I spend most of my time in the tech forums. That's my main field of knowledge so I spend a great deal of time helping people there. Especially since it seems that almost everyone in this world is troubled by their computer to some extent. In fact, I'm even giving one guy one on one programming sessions.
So yeah, it gets annoying helping people all the time, but once you've solved their problems it makes it all worth the trouble.

Re: A Voice for Moderation
Yup, that's why I've stuck around in BLTC so long. I figure why not share my knowledge and experience with drugs and maybe keep someone from making some bad choices.
There was even one guy who said I saved his life. He said the Dr told him if he hadn't come to the ER - like I told him to do - he would have died [I don't know why people insist on posting in BLTC asking if they should go to the ER due to something they've taken, but they do]. That kinda made my day when I found out.
If your main reason for wanting to be a Mod isn't to help people, you're kinda in the wrong business.
