Question Ubuntu and DSL

I know, I'm probably going to make an idiot of myself here, but here it goes.
I've been messing around with Ubuntu (live CD) recently, and so far I like it, but I can't figure out how to get the internet set up. We have a DSL connection, no proxy or anything. I just can't seem to find where I'd put in the dialing number, user name/password, etc. I'd think no matter what operating system it is, it would need to know that information. I've gone to system>admin>networking, and looked at the options for ethernet (because modem only applies to dial-up, right?), but that doesn't seem to help.
Anyway, any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I'm such a noob.

It's still a modem with DSL, but it doesn't dial a phone number, it just picks up a carrier signal.

It depends how it's connected to your computer too. USB or ethernet?

Ethernet.
I tried the "sudo pon" thing as well, but that didn't work. Said it couldn't find some folder or something. There's a very good chance I just did it wrong though.

Okay if it's connected by ethernet then it's the modem/router that connects to the internet. Your computer just hitches off that LAN connection.

Did you have it working in Windows before?

Also, got a make and model?

Yeah, I can always get the connection to work in Windows. And I know it's an Intel 2200, if that's what you're talking about.

Thumbs up Re: Ubuntu and DSL

Go into Administration > Networking and then configure your LAN card to receive IP settings automatically, IIRC.

Right now, A. We're planning on getting a router when we get another computer, but we don't have one yet. Will that make it easier or harder?

Routers are easier because the router connects to the internet then the connection can be accessed over LAN.

Although if you have an ethernet modem I'm surprised that doesn't work the same way.

Yeah, get the router and that'll be a bit easier. But for now, you can go into system>administration>Networking and just configure the modem from there, with all the logins and other things that you need.

You do use the modem tag, even if you connect to the modem through ethernet.
