What does it mean when they come up as grey in my panel? I know red is -rep and green is +rep, but there's no option to give neutral rep, and some of the grey ones I know are -rep.

Anyone care to educate me? :p

I think grey rep is when a person with grey overall rep themselves reps you.

Shot in the dark there.

Also, Jeff, do you think you could sort out the rep for the new mods?

I think its when someone who has rep thats a certain amount less than yours +reps you.

Jeff mentioned in the Reputation thread (in NOTT) that he edited the rep system so that only certain people could affect your rep status. I think that you must have positive rep in order for the rep that you deal out to count for or against anyone.

With that said, I think that the reputation will eventually show for the new mods. On my copy of vbul I had to update the Reputation Counters in the admincp before such changes took effect. I'm not sure how often vbul is supposed to update its counters automatically (or if it even does), but I'm sure things will be fixed soon.

I think the whole rep thing is stupid.

I find the rep system generally very upsetting. Sure it's nice when I get the occaisional nice one, but apart from that it's just a way for people to vent their spite and anger out on people in a way that they feel achieves something.

Yeah whatever good rep I get is always far outweighed by neg rep abuse.

The only neg rep I have are the two faked ones from -Spectral, and one from chelovek because "Lord Valuemart is ugly". And none of them are red, so they don't count anyways.

Of course, the majority of the rep I've gotten, with positive comments, are gray as well, so that doesn't help any

The more you actually do mod-work, the more negative rep you get (as well as general hate). I've got some from grayboy and another of his accounts calling me a faggot and suchlike, because I gave the guy a ban. And m0ckturtle's been abusing the shit out of me and wires both for infracting him. I get a lot of very nice rep too, though.

That said, if you avoid being heavy-handed, don't use negative rep as a punishment (how many of peoples' negative reps are from people they've downrepped themselves?) and resist the (occasionally huge) temptation to infract for things that are borderline, you should avoid the worst of it. At the end of the day, it's just comments on a screen. People get pissy on the internet. It really doesn't mean much.
