The number 7
So, most of us have probably seen the number 23? Seems that it's all coincidental that we see it in everyday life, and that we're not going to have a different fate after death than anyone else performing some bizarre 23 ritual. But that's besides the point. This thread is about why the number 7 is such a religious number, and why it should give clues as to tell apart fact from fiction.
Let's look at religion back in the day. The oldest religions all have something to do with astrology. Funny enough, this explains my point. These religions, (Romans, Greeks, Judaism, whatnot) and the religions spawned from them (Christianity, Islam, whatnot) will follow the same patterns. Patterns like symbols. The number 7 being common in almost every, if not all, religions. Why? Because as I said, many ancient religions are based on what was in the sky, or what gave the ancients their imagination. Planets. And how many planets can we see from earth with the human eye? Five, plus the sun and the moon. Seven. So is it not safe to say that the number seven when used in any religious text is purely a product of mythology and not of the real world?
Now saying this, please don't feel that because of this one aspect all religions must be wrong, that's not true. This thread covers one aspect, not every, and so should not be used to judge a religion as a whole.

Re: The number 7
The number seven represents completeness. The number six represents incompleteness. No mystery there.

Re: The number 7
How so? Like how is the number 7 related to completeness or incompleteness, and where does this interpretation originate?

So... what's the point of it then?

Well if the source of the number 7 as a holy number is actually just based on stars, then would this not prove that when it's contained in a story as part of a religion, that that story is falsified?

Interesting, can you provide evidence?

You could say so, but i'm sure they would come up with something.
Infact they'd probably say something along the lines of 'God left the planets there as a sign to those who looked for him' or some rhetoric like that.
The idea isn't to just falsify the story, that will just leave it open to excuses.
If you found something along the lines of 'The original author of the bible was a crack-addict', then people might take notice.

I read about that before, and found it really interesting, but then if that was so, why would the number seven be reused in other religious beliefs, in other context, for example, the seven heads of the beast, or the 7 deaths caused by Cain, the 7 days the flood lasts in the Sumerian and Assyrian flood myth, or the seven gates of hell?

Re: The number 7
7 means one, and another one, one more, another, another, another and finally one more. IE; 7. 6 funnily enough stands for "6"
Lay off the acid/paint thinner for a bit guys.

Re: The number 7
I think the resurfacing of the number 7 in various religions and literature goes way before the study of our immediate solar system. I think the use of the number 7 originates from integer mathematics. The integer 7 multiplied to any integer from 2 to 9 produces more prime numbers than the other numbers in the set. Excluding the integer 1 out of the Normal Integer Set because it obviously produces prime numbers.
Just my theory. As far as I know, math was a prerequisite for primitive astronomy. So something had to plant the seed before it could develop some roots.

Re: The number 7
Also multiplying 7 to any other number in a Normal Integer set has no definite pattern in products. Whereas, all of the other numbers do. This is mainly because its the first odd number after the middle of the set (5), which does not allow it recursion of a pattern before its products are greater than 100. Also because 9 is the only other odd number after 5, which obviously would have to show a pattern in a log base 10 numerical system.

This is another awesome example of the Creator's handy-work, woven right into all reality, like an entire kingdom built from a single invincible thread. Such conditions existed even before it was recognized, which leads to a whole new train of thought and investigation. The journey continues.
Quote:
There are SEVEN notes in the musical scale. All other pitches are only variations of these. When the musician uses the eighth note he goes back to “do” and starts over. Man named the notes but God fixed the sounds, even as God fixed the days of the week, and man named them.
Life operates in a cycle of SEVENS. Changes take place in the body every SEVEN years. There are SEVEN bones in the neck, SEVEN bones in the face, SEVEN bones in the ankle, and SEVEN holes in the head. Most births are multiple of SEVENS. The hen sits three weeks (21 days); the pigeon two weeks (14 days); after having laid eggs for two weeks. Of 129 species of Mammalia (sic) the majority have a period from conception to birth of an exact number of weeks, a multiple of SEVEN.
Human physiology is constructed on a law of SEVENS. Children are born to mothers in a certain number of weeks usually 280 days, a multiple of SEVENS. Fevers and intermittent attacks of gout, ague, and similar complaints have a period of operation of SEVEN, FOURTEEN or TWENTY-ONE days knows as critical days.
All departments of nature are marked all over with mathematics. In this realm practically everything is in SEVENS. Notice next time the shape of frost when it crystallizes on the window. Notice the small snow flakes.

I actually believe that math and physics are, as Albert Einstein said, the language of God. However, I do not express them publicly because it makes people not want to listening to us.

Personally I see the number 12 and its factors and multiples alot more than 7. 12 semitones in an octave, 12 months of the year ect.

Its true when it comes to linear time. Standards of time have the highest common denominator of 4.
