Default Subforums? What gives?

Maybe I just made the fools mitake of waking up at 4:00 AM, but I just looked at R&R and its got a "subforum" called "Music Tech".. can this be removed? Its very unecessary, this is 4:00 am so I haven't talked to the other R&R mods yet but I have a feeling they will not like this either.

We monitor pretty closely all the threads, and if there is anything that could be moved to T&T, DIY, etc etc., because of how it deals with 'technology', we move it.

It just seems silly to complicate it, my reasoning for this is that I'd say MOST of the people that post on R&R regularly would post on threads that someone might think belong in a "Music Tech" forum. So if we really followed the 'rules', eventually you might have nearly as many posts in the "Music Tech" subforum as in the actual R&R forum.

I just do n't know what the deal with this is........

I think it's a great idea. In the past I've had questions about amps or music software and was never really sure where to post it.

I totally welcome the idea.

But those things are ALREADY BEING DISCUSSED (and still are, despite this "Music Tech" forum in R&R. They have ALWAYS been discussed there, some of our most common and popular threads are about amps, music software, etc etc. It even mentions them in the forum description.

"All things music and music related. Listening, Buying, Selling, Making, or Breaking."

Before that, it EXPLICITY mentioned amps and the like.

The new "Tech" forum description says:

"Recording, mixing, sequencing, and amplifying. What tech to use and how to use it to make music."

All of which are includd under "
"All things music and music related. Listening, Buying, Selling, Making, or Breaking."

Furthermore I also don't see WHY this was done, as far as I know nobody asked for it, and all its going to do is create more work for moderators in R&R. Are we supposed to move all threads that could possibly go in Music Tech in there now?

Also it must be said that in R&R there has probably not ever in the history of the forum been a SINGLE thread that JUST discuss the music "tech". You can't talk about guitar amplifiers without talking about music itself, and this has been true for a long time there.

We have a very very good thing going on over there, I just don't see the point in confusing it. Were never going to be able to decide which threads belong in which forum now.

I also don't see why the people who are currently moderating R&R weren't asked what they thougth about this before it was put into effect.

And btw Meta your claim makes NO sense man. If you always wondered hwere to post those things, why didnt yo uever just open up R&R and look? Or look at the forum descriptions? We talk about that kind of stuff EVERY day. In every thread practically something of that nature is talked about.

Well, it's a forum sambob moderates, so with a little input from the other AR&R mods it would be their call. I think it's not a bad idea for a sub-forum, but not really necessary.

You're totally right.

I haven't had such a question - and so didn't look to post - anything for about a year.

I really should have looked at the forum description and looked inside the forum before I opened my mouth here.

My bad.

Well I just didnt understand why you said that... because Meta you HAVE talked about amps and guitars in R&R before. Its been a while, but we talked quite a bit about organs, guitars, amps, and recording equipment a while ago.

If its really unlear as to where to post things about 'music tech', I could see the need for said subforum.. but the thing is its a SUB forum so you have to be in R&R already just to notice it. And we've literally NEVER had a problem with people not knowing where to post that kind of stuff.

The only 'wrong forum' problems we EVER have in R&R is about once every 3-6 months someone posts a thread asking:

"Is it okay to talk about other types of music such as hip hop in this forum, even though its called Rock and Roll?"

:P And lets be honest, the people that post those threads.. aren't too bright.

Once upon a time there was a separate music tech forum separate from the discussion of music. It worked well before, so I re-added it.

I added a lot of forums last night. I was on a roll.

I was wondering what was with the new subforum, I mean it just doesn't make any sense. We've been discussing amps, mixers, guitars, and a whole host of software in AR&R for YEARS and it's never been a problem. This will do nothing but complicate things.

I haven't talked to Goose on the subject but I'm sure he wouldn't want a subforum within AR&R, at least not one with such a seemingly little purpose.

When was this anyway? I've been a member since midway throug 2000, and I don't remember ever seeing it.

So are we supposed to move all threads that could possibly belong in this forum into it now? Do we move all new threads posted, and tell users to post in the new forum? I dont think they're going to like it, they will still continue to post new threads in R&R.

I don't mean to be a pain in the ass, but the I'm already receiving email complaints about it, and I just don't know what to tell people.

Oh and also let me ask, if there originally was a music tech forum (though as I said, I don't remember this, as I've been both moderator of T&T and R&R at times and never heard about it), why was it removed?

Also, will there be similiar "Tech" forum for Moving Pictures and other similiar forums as well?

Haha, that made me laugh.

As for the music tech forum, maybe it will just separate RnR a bit, organising it at the same time. In my own little mind it makes sense.

If people actually post in the subforum, yes that would be true. Though of course, then you have to ask, does it nee to be separated in the first place?

Oh well I guess we'll have to wait a little longer to see what Infectedgoose things.

I don't really see how that would happen, generally when posters mention a amp, mic, or guitar they almost always mention a sound or tone they're looking for (ie Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, and SRV tone). A sub-forum dedicated just to these 3 or 4 things is unnessecary.

These sorts of things are talked about almost daily in AR&R and not one posters has complained about it or suggested there is such an overflow that it should be a seperate forum made just for it.

There's really no organization to it, it just seems like it will needlessly confuse the posters ,and future posters, of the forum.

My musical knowledge is quite limited so therefore is my opinion.

I can play guitar and drums, but the technological side of it surpasses me.

I guess it'll be down to Infectedgoose.

I suppose so, maybe Sam and I should get to work on some sort of Batman-esq spot light with the image of a Goose superimposed over the light?

I do hate having to devide up things of a similar topic, it feels so messy and confusing.

It feels kind of like cheating..

I agree with Sam on this. I saw it, and I didn't like it. We're good at covering whatever is in the forum, and I don't think it needs any subdivisions. I would like R&R to just be plain R&R.

I guess my Goosey-sense was tingling. I saw a subforum and immediately came here, lo-and-behold, all of my moderating brethren had spoken in disfavor.

Huzzah.

PS. I saw the Goose-light too.

Perhaps you should also install some sort of 1-800-Goose hotline?

Or maybe even use AIM once in a blue moon??? :p

OK, maybe Music Tech wasn't my best idea.

I was looking through an old NIRVANAnet(tm) message echo listing and saw it there. Music Tech was a pre-web message echo from the old dial-up BBS days. I think it got pruned in the move-to-the-web because there wasn't enough interest. I thought now that there might be.

But if you want to keep the tech talk in the &R&R forum, that's how it will be. I moved the messages back to &R&R and wiped the forum.

Jeff thanks for responding. I think yo have the thanks of all three of us, plus many regulars. I don't think Music Tech is a BAD idea, but R&R is a very active forum with quite a few regulars, a fairly close community too. I just think its a bad time to be splitting it up.
