This is really about infractions and such. I just wanted to say 'penal':D .

When we first had vb when we gave infractions we had a choice to give a warning or an infraction. But the option to give a warning - in all but a couple of cases - is no longer available to us.

I always liked the option to warn because there are cases where someone makes a thread that doesn't belong in a forum, but isn't really considered spam. In those cases it's good to be able to do more than just lock the thread but not have to give an infraction.

Granted a message of warning could be given in the thread before the lock, but I still liked the warnings.

Well today I had someone post a thread asking for money be sent to his PayPal with a story I think sounds like bullshit. I gave him an infraction for scamming. But thought better of it when I realized it was an instant ban.

It will show up in his list of infractions, but it will be shown as reversed [with a message if I want to add to the warning], so it won't count against him.

Just thought I'd see what others here think of this.

Well I'm not really sure. The posters in the forum I moderate are generally very well behaved. It seems to be a case of they are all very good, or if they're very bad it's a badness deserving of an immediate infraction.

It depends if they believe that you have their best interests at heart or not. If they have enough respect for you that they believe you're trying to help, rather than condemn, then warnings help.

Meh, infractions are worth very little penal points. If they'd crank up the points, then we'd need to able to give warnings. The current system is to my liking.
