Truly polyamorous relationships where a girl (or guy) is equally in love with two partners and couldn't--wouldn't want to--choose between them definitely do exist. Equal poly relationships aren't particularly common, but it can and does work just like that.

I find that a good illustration to try to explain it is that a mother can love two children more than anything in the world, yet wouldn't ever be able to choose between them. It's a different kind of love, but the same principle can and does apply to non-platonic relationships.
