my friend had a massive glass piece and you had to use a screen or it would always suck through towards the end of the bowl
brass is the better screen, I've found it has a kinda weird taste, but if you burn it with a lighter a bit before putting it in its not bad

Brass starts oxidizing from heat at lower temperatures than stainless steel and can release harmful byproducts. Stainless is the obvious choice.
Edit - I've started using titanium screens lately and they are just amazing. Less fiddly than glass screens and is far more heat resistant than brass or stainless.
