Default The beach

Anyone seen the film the beach with Leonardio DiCaprio in? Basically some gap year students in Thailand find a map leading to paradise. They arrive to find similar like minded travellers. They live together on the island away from the rest of civilisation, they grow marijuana and sell some of it to buy rice and supplies every few months. Eventually it all goes wrong but that's not my point.

I would love to do this, get a few friends find an island and "live of the fatta the land". How hard would it be? Where would the best place be to do it? The Caribbean, South east Asia or somewhere else? How many people would i need? What skills would i need to learn? Any other tips?

Not gonna happen. For now anyway. If you're lucky civilisation will start collapsing in a few decades and you can do this shit then. Until then, join a commune or something.

It could happen, there are plenty of uninhabited islands in south east Asia, probably be near impossible finding an uninhabited suitable island in the Caribbean though.

Mm. A lovely thought, some sort of self-sufficient haven in the middle of nowhere... but of course, not terribly likely.

There are a great number of uninhabited islands down in the caribbean, to be exact the Bahamas and the BVIs. Some might be a single acre, some are 8 or 9. Yet the exact legalities of staking a claim to any one of them are questionable. They might be deemed nature sanctuaries which will really piss off the local police when you come clearing away sections for cannabis cultivation.

I was thinking about this today.

And yes it would work, but it'd be very hard to beat the apathy in people and get them to take part.

Everyone would have to be equal though. And everyone would have to give up all their materialistic goods when they come and instead bring supplies for the people. The fact that one person might bring more than another merely shows hat they weren't equal outside of the group not that they shouldn't be equal inside the group.

Ultimately, everyone wants the world to be like that. But everyone's just waiting for the whole world to change overnight, it doesn't happen like that though, some people need to go and demonstrate how it works and others would join them.

Of course, getting sustainable land would be difficult and becoming self-sufficient much harder. Although, i suppose you wouldn't have to become completely self-sufficient just to a certain extent.

But ultimately, there have been hundreds of discussions about this sort of thing but no-one will take the leap of faith.

Also, what do you do about issues like Drug Use. In my opinion, it shouldn't be allowed but instead help people come off drug addiction so it could be a truly free society. I would also teach everyone Esperanto so communication is not inhibited by nationality and get people to renounce their national identity so no-one would be prejudiced about someone merely because of their nationality. Of course, you'd have to get plenty of people who believe in communism, anarchism, and equality, although i think there's plenty getting them organised could be difficult.

Actually, looking at my rules, etc. i guess the anarchist part of the Anarcho-Communism refers only to lack of centralised government rather than the "NO RULEZ1!11!1!" idea.

Then there's other issues like Law and Order, etc.

See this thread: http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=1976055

One major problem is that you have to do it in your own country due to visa' etc.
Also most of the land is owned now. I totally disagree with ownership of land, i mean who gave them the right to own part of the world we all have to live on? It's a disgrace but it's still going to be a major hurdle for anything like this.

Also, what about people who need glasses or dental treatment, etc. Overall, it only really works perfectly if the whole world were to change at once. But that's never going to happen.

P.S you should read Lord Of The Flies

Ha that threads so similar, the same film inspiring the ops. There are plenty of uninhabited islands in south east asia, i'd allow mild drug use canabis for example. I think growing canabis would allow us to raise money for things liek toothpaste and medical bills.
