Default My father is drunk.

He seems to have had more than one too many, and it's really making me feel uncomfortable. He was outside, and turned up his radio. Then he came in, and started eating some sliced turkey while sitting on the kitchen floor. Later, walking from his chair to the bathroom, he had to use the couch as a guide for walking, and now he's been in the bathroom for about 20 minutes.

I just took the guns out of his room, and secured them in a safe that only I have the key to. I'm also considering leaving for the night and spending the night in a motel. It doesn't bother me when he drinks, but it REALLY upsets me when he gets drunk. He shouldn't be drinking in the first place, since he's had a heart attack and has multiple cardio problems.

I'm going to sit him down tomorrow and have a serious talk with him. Whenever I tell him i don't like seeing him drunk, he says "What, I'm not allowed to drink?". So I'm thinking about just telling him if he gets drunk like this one more time, I don't want anything to do with him ever again.

BTW, I'm 18, he's 49, we live alone.

Does anybody have some suggestions? And an update, right now he's still in the bathroom, and I can hear him talking.

My dad was an alcoholic for years and years. I've had to lift him out of his own puke and he would apologize when he'd get too drunk but it was always a big issue. Anyways, if someone wants to drink they're gonna keep doing it. If they're gonna quit they've got to quit for themselves and be in the right frame of mind.

However your pap doesn't sound like he drinks everyday so just tell him that he should act his age and not eat turkey on the floor. Tell him its fucking with your relationship and you dont like seeing him drunk. Tell him you're gonna get as drunk as you want whenever you want and that might work. Tell him you'll move out and deal meth if he doesn't stop.

Get over it and let him do as he pleases. As long as he isn't spending the rent money on it it isn't that big a deal. I would stay, simply because drunk people can hurt themselfs and I wouldn't want my father cracking his skull on the corner of the bench and dieing because I was taking him being drunk too seriously and leaving. Actually I would get drunk with him.

Honestly I think you should get the fuck over yourself.

Moving the guns to a safe... is the most pointless thing you have done after making this thread.

As long as he isn't being violent, abusive, a danger to himself, or drunk dialing I don't see what's so wrong, it's not as if you have guests.

I'd say it was extremely sensible. You don't have to be a violent or angry drunk to do something stupid, you just have to be drunk.

If you're going to have a talk with him about it, don't be accusatory and don't give him an ultimatum, that never works. Try to explain why it makes you feel uncomfortable and try to reach a compromise of some sorts, like asking him not to drink when you're around.

You don't know why a story about a drunk guy eating on the floor with his kid in the house reminds you of a video about a drunk guy eating on the floor with his kid in the house?

Well, I'm back home now, after spending the night in the back of my truck at a rest area off the highway. When I was coming home this morning, I met up with a police officer for the city of Benton Harbor, and he agrees that I did the right thing by leaving. He gave me his personal cell number, and said that if I need some help talking to my dad about this, he can make some time to come down and help me out. My dad apparently got to bed safely, and is still laying there, but is awake. I'm still not completely sure how I'm going to approach him about this.

What is this something he does regularly? Or did he just decide to have a couple that turned into a few too many?

If its the later then I think you need to step back and take a look at the situation again - if he feels that he wants a drink now n then, even though its 'bad' on his condition, then that's his choice and all you can say is that you don't think its the correct one and you'd rather he didn't do it - but I think its a little drastic to not talk to him again.

If hes basically an alcoholic then yeah, you have the right to react in this manner.

That's not the reason I'm having the officer help me out. I talked to the officer because he'd have a better idea of what to do, especially compared to you people, since he's a bit wise, and has been there.

And kAtE-, he is an alcoholic, and drinks daily, but doesn't get DRUNK daily. It just really bothers me when he gets THAT drunk, and I'd rather he do that when I'm not there, as opposed to me having to leave and sleep in the back of my fucking car in a rest area.

No, that was you completely overreacting....

Unless you felt threatened or endangered, then you just spent the night outside to stir up needless drama. Wtf is this 'I dont feel comfortable' bullshit?

Let me tell you what makes me uncomfortable.
-People trying to beat the shit out of me.
-People trying to rape me.
-People being abusive to guests in my home.

Things that dont make me uncomfortable.
-Men getting drunk in their own home.
-Men who sit on the floor to eat.
-Men who sleep in.
-Men who spend 20 minutes on the jon.

Nothing you said has supported anything other then the fact that you're a stuck up prick that's overstepping his bounds.

(And as a side note, I especially like when someone asked you if you shared the bills, you replied 'I pay for my truck and half the internet.' Like you actually thought that gave you some financial credit. Your dads paying for everything, He's taking care of your judgemental ass, and until he starts blowing the rent on booze you can really piss off.)

If it makes your dad happy to get drunk and act like a kid then so fucking what. You dont wanna see it? Go in your room and close the door. Thats all it takes. Thats the common sense thing to do. Not drive to a rest stop and sleep in the back of your truck.

Good awnser. For or against the war?

Actually, I'm not going to keep going until I finally hit an issue you have a view on. The point is, you dont have to have had abortions to have a view on abortion. You dont have to be a soldier to have a view on the war. And you dont have to be an alchoholic to have a view on drinking.

And just for the record, my mom drinks her share. But she still shows up to work on time every day, still pays all her bills, and still takes care of her kids. So honestly, who cares how she chooses to unwind?

You're right, you don't have to have experience or knowledge of something to have a view or opinion. Of course, having experience or knowledge of something does somehow help one to have a useful opinion or view.

Experience and knowledge arent the same thing. Believe it or not, intelligent minds are capable of listening to a story and forming an informed opinion based on the facts presented. And if that doesnt go along with your personal beliefs, then you can deal with it.

No way? Two words that don't mean the same thing? Are you going to the dictionary on that one? EEK!

You can form a knowledge-base from information, but there are some things that are difficult to comprehend properly without experiencing firsthand.

Your argument was basically "You never experienced it firsthand? Well since you don't have any knowledge or experience in the matter, don't talk."

I'm sure that slipping in random words works just perfectly on the majority of preteen totseans, but from time to time, you will be called upon to express your arguments in an intelligent manner.

Yay I've 'earned the right" to comment just like my dad "earned the right" to have no contact with us as part of his conditional release.

Silentmind you're a tool who knows nothing about what hes talking about. If your Dad is in the lifestyle of drinking everyday (probably driving too) then you're fucked and it can only escalate. You can't just "leave it alone" or I'll get worse. Calling a cop was fucking stupid and selfish. Dumbest thing you could have done. If I was your dad I'd smack you for talking to a cop about me. However you clearly don't feel safe with him around drunk all the time. I'd try to regulate his drinking from everyday to select days. Tell him to go out and find a girlfriend (girlfriend money is better spent than booze money) or buy a boat or play poker instead. In order to quit or cut back on something that's a big part of your life you've got to replace it with something or you'll just go nuts. Tell him he should be setting a better example and if hes not careful hell lose a son.

People that drink at home are a whole lot less likely to be driving then people that go out and get drunk. The majority of the time, they dont go out at all once they start drinking. If he is driving, then theres a case to be made.

You're obviously biased, because you had a bad experience with your own father. And assuming he was incarcerated, theres obviously a serious problem in your case. And I have sympathy for you, but that doesnt make everyone that drinks evil.

And you can call me whatever you want, but MLOR is a spoiled child that thinks he can tell his parents what to do. As far as I can tell in this case, his father hasnt done a single thing wrong. The OP is being ridiculously selfish, because he doesn't want to inconvenienced by his fathers drinking. Even though it doesn't sound like that much of an inconvenience to begin with.

The only case the OP can make here is a concern for his parents well being. And thats not what he's worried about. He's worried about how it affects him. Instead of ragging on his drinking, you should be there to support him and talk to him as a friend about what's going on in his life. Why is he drinking? Is he depressed? Over what? These are things you should be interested in. Not him sitting on the floor to eat his dinner so that you 'have' to drive off to a rest stop to sleep.

Again, he doesn't care about any potential problem that might be there. This isnt an issue about concern for his fathers well-being. It's an issue about how the OP doesn't want to be embarassed/inconvenienced.

The rest of you can flame me all you want, but thats how I see it. And I'm done posting in this thread.

And I'm not saying that in a "I'm a big tough 19 year old who doesn't live with his parents" way or anything stupid like that. I had an alcoholic mother and she done some horrible things. But she wouldn't change and God knows it wasn't my responsibility to change her. We're their children man. They should be adult enough to run their own lives properly and if they don't it's our job to try and save them.

Also, you drink heavily yourself. Take a long hard look at your family and see what you might end up like...and if that's what you want.

eh?

You don't need to buy a house to leave. Rent a place, and if you can't afford that rent a room in a place.

I'm not going to become one of those types of people. Renting is the fast road to financial hell. I can't build equity renting a place.

Renting a house is, splitting the rent with other people is cheap.

The guns and such, I'm not sure how many landlords, or room mates, you'll find that are up for them.

Get him to take up smoking instead of drinking. Sure it's not the same, and arguably worse for the health (if he's 40+, he'll be dead long before the cancer kicks in anyway), but I've never seen a parent beat their kid over a pack of cigs, or anyone pass out in a pile of puke because they've had a cig too many.

Temporary fix, but it works for me. I smoked whenever I went out because I was always driving and didn't want to drink and risk getting a DUI. It'll be hard to change the addiction, but should be doable.

Also, don't rent. I had a chance to rent, even to do residence at uni, and I turned them both down. Why the fuck would I spend 500+ bucks a month for four years only to have nothing to show for it at the end? I'm saving money and putting a down payment whenever I can.

Get him back on smoking. Or even weed. It'll just make him more hungry, but unlike alcohol, will make him chill and not violent, not to mention will not induce throwing up, and doesn't cause cirrhosis.

What's wrong with parents? My parents are fine. My parents are fine with everything I'm doing, help me out financially and any other way, and let me drink/etc when I was younger. Whenever my dad and I went camping/fishing we'd make stops at the beer store, even when I was like 14.

The only thing is my mother keeps telling me to find a girl to settle down with. Jesus christ, I'm not a fucking Italian!

Nothing wrong with parents, but there comes a time when you have to assert your independence, become an adult and find your own way. I guess it happens earlier for some than for others.

I'd rather be that adult with a furnished house, nice car, and spending money than that adult with a small apartment, a 92 civic, and "freedom from damn dirty parents".

It all boils down to what your situation at home is, and what your wants/needs are. I don't have an issue with my parents, so there's no reason for me to move out right now. Sure I'd get the freedom to smoke weed whenever I wanted, but I'd also lose their supreme bill paying power. I'd rather not have to work a second job to afford rent than have a space where I can smoke weed without my parents knowing.

Besides, my bathroom window opens all the way, so at 2am, no-one's the wiser.

I'm sorry, but if you live with mummy and daddy at any age you're not an adult in my books.

Though I don't know how old you are, so perhaps it's just not time for you yet.

Your'll get more life experience moving out of home.
How old are you? If you're older then 18 then what a freeloader - or do you pay board?

I was out of home at 17, glad I did it earlier rather then later.

Yeah, life experience. I mean, I'll admit, I'm poor. And hell, you think having a 93 civic is a sign of destitute abject poverty? I'd cream myself if I got a 93 civic:p

But you know what? I'm 19, living like a bum has given me a bit of character and insight, and dare I say a bit of resourcefulness too. I won't deny I miss some creature comforts, having my washing and cooking done for me (when my mum wasn;t too hungover to cook..it was glorious when she did cook though!:D)...but I mean I'm young! I can do what I want, move at the drop of a hat and I know I'll land on my feet. I have my whole life ahead of me to enjoy a comfortable middle class existance but for now I have no problem living simply and being free. IMO it's worth more in the long run than having nice things.

Your mileage may vary.

I don't see how having extra bills to pay qualifies as "life experience".

Some of us are happy with middle class, and others strive for me freedom, it all depends on what you want. For me, money gets me freedom. I can scuba dive in any part of the world (because I've saved enough money), I can buy that Gibson guitar, the PS3, etc.

My present involves eating out at restaurants a lot more (I'm not really on a budget), and my future involves things like Ferrari's.

Maybe I'm being optimistic, or unrealistic, but I realize that if your parents aren't an "issue", there's no reason to remove them from the picture.

I'm not saying you can't be a lawyer or have a Ferrari if you move out, I'm merely pointing out that in life there is freedom to do things you way, and then there's the freedom to do things any way you please because you have money to blow.

The other day, me and a friend went skydiving. It cost about 200 total, some gas money, and a couple of hours of spare time. We couldn't have done that if we had to worry about the rent this month, the work we'd need to do to make that rent, or who'd clean the house and make lunch tonight.

Ryko, I see where you're coming from. Hell my dad lives over in Europe and has himself set up nicely over there. The possibility of me living with him has come up a few times. He's reasonably well off, middle class, etc.

But I've had my taste of freedom now and I could never go back. Sure I'd have nicer food, more money, etc, but I wouldn't have my freedom. More importantly, I wouldn't have my pride.

Different values I guess.

As I said, you sound like you're freeloading.

Just because some people move out of young doesn't mean they're 'poor' for life. I'm a student, part of being a student is having a tight budget. Ask most people that have been through university - a lot will say it was the best time of there lives, living in student housing, cheap student flats, eating instant noodles for meals etc.

That's got to be the most idiotic thing I've ever heard. It sounds like you regret it, but you're trying to make it sound grand because you don't want others to know you've fucked up. That's called rationalization hun.

I'm not freeloading. My parents want me at home, I want to be at home, and it's a mutually beneficial relationship. I save money, they save money, I don't have a heart attack working 4 jobs and eating ramen noodles every day, and I get free time.

See, time is the most valuable resource anyone has. If I have to work an extra 10 hours a week to make money for residency, that's 10 hours I can't hang with friends, go skydiving, or just sit on my ass baked.

Sure, I don't have communal showers, but I think having enough money to buy a hot tub more than solves that problem. With a hot tub in your yard, you're gonna get coeds pretty damn fast.

It's horrible to see a parent get truly fucked up.
I think it's especially frightening when you see the one person who's meant to be your protector, the person who's allways been there for you just go so so wrong.

I remember the last time my mum got horribly drunk, it made me feel sick and scared right through.

I've got no professional advice, but I'd reccomend talking to your dad when he's sober, telling him just how scared and sad it makes you feel.
Even if he cant stop getting ridiculously shitfaced for himself, he should do it for you.

A rather dramatic approach might be to say "Fine. The next time you have a drink, I'll have one too. The next time you get completely wrecked, I will too."

That might possibly make them consider what they're doing, if it means they'll be damaging you too.

Then again, if you do that and he doesent care, you might consider if he's worth your concerns in the first place.

Are you able to move out and get your own place? For your sake, I mean. Its' a really fucking uppping type experience to see a parent ruin themselves, and you need to protect yourself.

Seriously, scary as fuck.

My Mom drinks pretty much constantly, she's an alcoholic, but not a big drunk.

But.

When she =does= get drunk, I don't know what the hell she'll do. The things she says, the things she does... goodness, her drinking led to the fight that led to her last divorce and 12 cranial stitches. She gets scary as hell, and downright mean.

So I get it. Like everyone except the total jackasses have said, talk to him, and if it doesn't work but still truly bothers you, move out.

What Yoyobek said about getting trashed with him wasn't a bad idea, either.
