Ubuntu
Just wanted to share my opinions on Ubuntu, seeing as though alot of people here are strongly against it. Also some questions.
Personally, for use on a desktop PC, I find it to be excellent. I have no complaints what so ever. I have had no trouble installing programs, setting up the interface the way I like it and have never had it crash on me.
Whilst it may not be the most hardcore version, I use it because I wanted the 'ease' of Windows and the stability/functionality of linux, which Ubuntu does perfectly for me.
For what reasons is it so hated on these forums?
I don't know much of technical stuff about the distribution so some info there would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Ubuntu
As an experienced user of mainstream distributions, I do not like forked distributions because they teach uncommon practices and other strange things.
So far, SuSE, Mandriva, Ubuntu, ClarkConnect.. all of these distributions have hacks and patches and changes in thier distributions which are not able to be applied to thier mainstream counterparts.
This is why Ubuntu for example, is not good for new users.
They are learning procedures and operations only applicable to that distribution.
You have also failed to describe what "ease of use like Windows" Ubuntu presents to you that is not available in any other Linux distribution.

Re: Ubuntu
Well for starters to me it seems there is better hardware support in Ubuntu compared to other distros I have tried (FC and Suse). This is not to say that it actually does have better hardware support, but for me and several of my family/friends, they have had less hardware trouble using Ubuntu.
There is also the automounting of file systems, nice package management and easy installation.
I just find it very clean. I'd say it is near perfect for the mass market.
Once again don't have a stab at me, I proclaim to be relatively new to linux, these are just my observations.

Yes, well that is nice that you can't actually give an example of what hardware you are talking about. Hardware support deals with the kernel, and since Ubuntu uses and older kernel than Fedora for example, depending on what Fedora and Ubuntu releases you are comparing, you would be wrong.

Yes, unless told to do so Fedora does not automount filesystems from removable devices. I don't want shell users to have access to my USB stick or any other users of my systems if I just happen to have a file backup or two on a removable drive and plug it in, I don't want it globally readable without me telling the system to do so.
While Ubuntu may seem "better", the definition of better is debateable, in your case "better" is "less secure".
Anybody can mount a device and edit /etc/fstab to mount the device with options they want as far as permissions at any time.

BE more precise in your observations so we actually have something to discuss. Like I told another user just a while ago in IRC who said they couldn't compile RT2500 drivers or Unreal IRCd, thier inexperience doesn't mean something "sucks" which is what they said.

Re: Ubuntu
Alright let me rephrase what I meant.
It SEEMS to me that Ubuntu is the closest distribution for release to the mass market - aka, the best for the majority of people.
Face it, most people don't even know what a kernel is.
Best tool for it's job imo.

I was not aware of that.
Since you are stating it as some sort of fact, you should be able to show references of where you are getting your data.
Please do.

Re: Ubuntu
Jeez man, are you serious?
I don't have evidence, I just have common sense. I can almost guarantee that if you did a survey of the average population, the majority will think it has something to do with Fried Chicken.
There is no need to provide evidence on something that is blatantly obvious.
Do you question the validity of my claim?

Kernel != Colonel
Are you serious, or just dumb?

As I said, I was not aware of the claim you made, it's blatantly obvious that I do not think it is blatantly obvious, which by your logic means that there is a need to provide evidence.

Absolutely.
I question the validity of anyone who thinks a kernel has anything to do with fried chicken.
