So I was reading the paper and I saw a story about a 60 year old woman who recently gave birth to twin boys! I'm not sure if they came from her eggs, because she got invitro fertilization...Also, I can't imagine that she hadn't gone through at least premenopause yet, so her eggs would be all useless. This same woman has a 6 year old son, 2 grown sons who are 33 and 36 and a daughter who is 40.

So what do you guys think of a 60 year old woman having a baby?

Personally, I don't know WHAT to think. When I'm 60, my daughter will be 40 and I will most likely be a grandmother! 60 just seems so old to me...My mom is 60 and I can't imagine her having another baby.

well there is no limit in the US for IVF, but it is suggested that the potential mother be younger than 50. in this case, however, the woman got the IVF in south africa - apparently they specialize in IVF for older women down there...idk.

personally, i think the parents are being selfish. these children are never going to have really great lives and their parents can easily die before they reach puberty. while people are living to be much old these days, that doesnt mean they are in the right condition to be parents of young children, or young adults for that matter.

I read about this today. I think it's fucking ridiculous. I don't know the exact numbers, but I do know that that the possibility of birth defects increases dramatically after about age 35. Down syndrome, as one example. This woman is DAMN lucky her kids turned out ok. Bet she wouldn't feel like such a role model if they popped out completely fucked up and the doctors told her it was solely because she was too old to be having kids anymore.

Am I being inconsiderate? Probably. But I think IVF should be for people who can't get pregnant naturally due to slow swimmers, or a lazy ovary or something, not because the woman's body is not supposed to carry a fucking child anymore. She probably went to a bunch of doctors in the states who refused to do the procedure for that very reason. Yep, I kinda hate this woman.

I think sixty is a disgusting age to be having children at.
Parenting is hard work, work that most sixty year olds couldn't keep up with. They're not going to be able to do the majority of the things that younger parents would be able to do. It's unfair on their children. Furthermore, they're old, they should be sitting back in their rocking chairs, chatting to their grandkids.
I don't think it's fair to have children at stage in your life where it's now comming to a close.

I know someone of about 14 whose father is like 80 or something.
I'm not one to judge, but they seem to have a pretty dysfunctional family, and that's understandable. But maybe the father was always bad at having a proper relationship with his children.
