Ripcord ignition?
alright, havent been around here in forevre i kno, i kinda lost out on my pyro things considering i havent had so much as a lighter for 3 months. anywho
you kno how grenades have that pin, you pull it and it then it goes boom? could someone perhaps explain to me how this mechanism works, and how i could make it? i plan on making a ripcord ignition system that works like a grenade, but it will be flash powder it ignites.
yes, it is because i have no lighters.....so im going to experiment and attempt a maybe around m80 sized cracker with this.

Re: Ripcord ignition?
It's pretty simple...
From wiki, "A classic hand grenade has a safety handle (sometimes called by the slang term, "spoon") and a removable safety pin that prevents the handle from being released. In transit, some grenade types also have a safety clip to further prevent the handle from coming off. Before removing the pin, the soldier grips the grenade to prevent the handle being released at the same time. With the pin removed, the grenade is thrown, the handle is released, and a spring-loaded striker ignites a pyrotechnic delay element in the fuse. The delay burns for a pre-set amount of time and then activates the detonator, exploding the grenade."

Re: Ripcord ignition?
There's a really easy way to do this. Just have the fuse sticking out of the device, and next to it, you tape a matchhead. You then cut the striking surface from a matchbox and use the non sticky side of the tape to make sure the striking part is pressed up against the matchhead. Then when you want to light it, you just yank the striker out, it scrapes against the matchhead, which lights, and then lights the fuse.

Wow, I'd love to have a nigger-rigged flash salute IN MY HAND while I strike a match on it's surface.

Re: Ripcord ignition?
Actually what he describes is a generally accepted method used by many people.
If you're stupid enough to have a fuse short enough to have the match flame against the salute, you have other problems besides the ignition.

Re: Ripcord ignition?
It sounded familiar, yeah, but I thought that was because it was a throwback to my kewl days (not gonna say what my username was then, it was years ago anyway...)

I use a party popper in a tube with packed KNO3/sugar mix.

And to add to this since I once seen one took apart. The handle releases the spring-loaded striker wich in turn doesnt directly ignite the delay mix but sets off a small rifle primer which then ignites the delay.
Demunic just why, if you are a pyro, are you seperated from your fire?
Oh and hydroponichronic if he doesnt have lighters than theres a good chance he doesnt have matches. Anyone in the right mind would use both interchangably with out having to be told so. Sorry. You fail.

Re: Ripcord ignition?
There's a decent tutorial on APC:

I've tried this method, works fine. I have never really had a use for it other than with little novelty things such as smoke bombs.

Matches and lighters are not neccecarily interchangeable. You can pick up a pack of matches from most restaurants or buy a box from the local grocery place with no ID needed. I've been denied lighters because I got carded, but I've always been able to get matches.
