Hm, what?
Gaming?

If you got loads of ram (3/4 of 1GB or more).
Give solaris a try.
You can download it from sun.com
Sun's download manager is amazingly fast.
It'll take you about 40 mins to download all of the cds with a dsl connection.

Solaris is just another Unix-like operating system, It doesn't require 3 or 4 GB of RAM.. It will handle as much data throughput as any Linux system.
Don't listen to these tools.

I never said it requires 3 or 4 GB of RAM.
I said 3/4 of 1GB(768MB), expecting he plans to run (jds, gnome, cde).
Linux at least needs 8MB of RAM.
While Solaris needs 256MB of RAM.
http://tinyurl.com/2du4pu

I have a machine running solaris 10 next to me with gnome.
512MB of ram and it lags.

(Don't flame me with the "I said solaris, not solaris 10")

Clearly you did not specify any attributes relating to needing 3 or 4 GB of RAM. I have also run Solaris 10 with 128MB of RAM without Gnome, so while you have now said that is what you said which you clearly didn't, you are still wrong. Solaris 10 doesn't need 256MB of RAM either.

Also, about your comment about lagging, that doesn't have only to do with the amount of RAM you have.
Depending on exactly what it is that is lagging, could be from your processor, amount of RAM or video card you are using.

Post Re: what is solaris 10 good for?

Solaris is especially good at SMP on large servers, like the Sun T1000 and T2000. Since it's also the reference platform for all of Sun's UltraSPARC based systems, you may find it useful for purposes of development or production if you happen to have one.

What's your mother good for?

It used to run fine on a P2 768MB of ram, on-board video card.
Solaris 9 though, and newer versions of GNOME are supposed to be faster.

First E*NIX arguing that isn't Linux related?

BTW: I can't wait to see T2000 benchmarks. Is the 8 encryption engines only a rumor?

The biggest problem with your posts are they are not descriptive.
If you wish to be understood more and misunderstood less, take more time in relaying data that you are putting forth in a post.

All of the posts I've seen from you are so fundamentally fucking retarded I almost can't stand to read them.

Take this for example:
Quote:
It'll take you about 40 mins to download all of the cds with a dsl connection.
While this is hardly relevant to this thread, and doesn't mean much, it is an example.. the time it takes to download something doesn't merely depend on what class or style or protocol connection you use.. but your actual bandwidth you are allocated and have at your disposal. Some DSL connections are faster than some cable connections.

So really what you meant to say was, that Sun/com's servers are fast, not it's "download managers" and that depending on the bandwidth you have, you could download all of Solaris 10 in 40 minutes.

A DSL connection at 256KBPS won't download Solaris 10 in no fucking 40 minutes. I can download a 3GB spin of Fedora in about 60 minutes on 5MBPS cable.. this relates to actual bandwidth not the connection type you are on.. which you made absolutely no effort to explain or describe.

In the event your argument is that it needs no explaining, the person who needs no explanation already knows enough about what you aren't explaining, to see your post is full of trash.

You will probably take offense to my post to you, and I am not surprised.
Most people do take offense when they are confronted with something they seriously don't beleive
to be true, and in this case it is about the lack of quality and effort put into your posts.

So, I also suggest just to realize that you are doing this, rather than simply denying it.. and possibly try to make an effort in the future to further clarify exactly what you are saying in a post.

Most people are in denial of what actually is. Humility with truth is one of the greatest virtues that man can possess.

Thing is, no matter how humble the person, the truth still hurts without it being immensely sugarcoated. Because in modern society, most of us have become pussies when confronted with the truth.

On topic; Solaris is good for pretty much anything, if you have the skills and experience to control it. Once you learn how to use such a beautiful operating system you're not going to want to go back.
