Question Screen Resolution

I'm running Linux Mint Bianca and it won't give me an option to run my screen resolution past 1024x768. I went into

Code:
 sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and added

Code:
 Section "Screen"

Identifier "Screen0"

Device "Videocard0"

Monitor "Monitor0"

DefaultDepth 24

Option "metamodes" "1280x1024 +0+0; 800x600 +0+0; 640x480 +0+0"

SubSection "Display"

Depth 24

Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

EndSubSection
but in the options, it doesn't display anything past 1024x768.

What did I do wrong?

I'm running an NVIDIA Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600] graphics card and my monitor is a NEC Multisync LCD 1810x.

Post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file in code tags or to http://rafb.net/paste then post the URL here. It is totally possible the resolution dialog you are using doesn't get it's values from the xorg.conf file, but eliminates resolutions which are not possible. While you card most likely supports alot of resolutions, that is why I want to see your log file for X so we can determine the problem.

here is my Xorg.0.log file

But yeah, my resolutions worked in Fedora after some tweaking, I don't see why Mint/Ubuntu is being so stupid.

You will probably want to explicitly specify HorizSync and VertRefresh rates in your Section "Monitor" section of xorg.conf and set them according to your LCD panel.

The important parts of your log file are these:
Code:
(II) NV(0): Supported VESA Video Modes:

(II) NV(0): 720x400@70Hz

(II) NV(0): 720x400@88Hz

(II) NV(0): 640x480@60Hz

(II) NV(0): 640x480@67Hz

(II) NV(0): 640x480@72Hz

(II) NV(0): 640x480@75Hz

(II) NV(0): 800x600@56Hz

(II) NV(0): 800x600@60Hz

(II) NV(0): 800x600@72Hz

(II) NV(0): 800x600@75Hz

(II) NV(0): 832x624@75Hz

(II) NV(0): 1024x768@87Hz (interlaced)

(II) NV(0): 1024x768@60Hz

(II) NV(0): 1024x768@70Hz

(II) NV(0): 1024x768@75Hz

(II) NV(0): 1280x1024@75Hz

(II) NV(0): 1152x870@75Hz
and this:
Code:
(II) NV(0): Generic Monitor: Using hsync range of 28.00-51.00 kHz

(II) NV(0): Generic Monitor: Using vrefresh range of 43.00-60.00 Hz
As you can see the highest resolution supported at the maximum setting of 60Hz is 1024x768.

My machines do DDC probes quite well under Fedora, I can get resolutions up to something insane like 1600x1475 or something without any specification of HorizSync and VertRefresh rates..
I use 1024x768 myself though.

Speaking about this, I have a similar problem. After certain upgrade of xorg, It started failing to detect the settings of my monitor, and only a 16:9 mode will work (even when I tried to change it using the gnome app for it) So I manually set the h sync and v refresh values. Now I am able to select 1024X768 from that app, but the login screen allways comes up ina 16:9 resolution. It is not a tragic problem, but it is startning to annoy me (specially the fact that I', failing to configure everything properly). I don't know why X comes up witha resolution that is not in xorg.conf file...

Here is my xorg.conf file:

Code:
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

#

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

# values from the debconf database.

#

# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)

#

# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*

# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg

# package.

#

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated

# again, run the following command:

# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

also I found this
Code:

(II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1280x768
Of course, looking at the log I can't say why is it using
that mode...

BTW Does this command change the actual parameters of the X server or the stored configuration?

You will probably need the i915resolution or i810resolution packages for your distribution, if it doesn't have one, package it and submit it for inclusion or compile it from the source archive.

I thought you were trying for 1240x1024 but anyways..
With correct Hsync and Vsync setting you should get any resolution your video card and monitor support.
