Mercury
OK so if i were to make a fountain using mercury instead of water, would a regular water pump work? any special precautions i should take?

Re: Mercury
STFU stateofhack he wasn't asking about the medical issues he was asking about using a water pump to pump mercury, now if you don't have anything to say about the fluid dynamics of mercury I suggest you don't talk.

Re: Mercury
Shut up your probably black!
STFU look up the density of Mercury you fool and think about it!
WHY the fuck would you pump mercury anyway? You must be fucking retarted...

Re: Mercury
i dont see why it wouldn't be able to work. Any metal in there would probably alloy with it, if it comes in contact.

Re: Mercury
wouldn't the piping need to be molten to alloy
and answering the original question, it would probably work a water pump would most likely pump any fluid, all it does is create a pressure gradient, all fluids follow pressure gradients, except super fluids, but those are fucking crazy beasts.

Re: Mercury
thanks for the replies (the helpful ones)
About how much would 1 LB of mercury be in volume? (like in liters/cups/etc.)

Off the top of my head, mecury is ten times denser than water, and water is a pint a pound the world around. 16/10 is 1.6 fluid onces.

Re: Mercury
What a very very strange and interesting idea. How fucking cool would a Hg fountain be? I would think that any alloy reactions would be minor, though over time............ As for your pump, well, you don't want an oil pump. Any pump you get is going to be expensive. I doubt a water pump would really be able to push all that weight for so long without wearing out (most are cheap shitty pumps) and you can't use an oil pump froma fridge, since it will contaminate the Hg.
I don't know man, I'm sure it is possible some how, just do the research, and please, do make a vid and post it. That is some cool shit.
