Default Is it just me, or does the search function not work very well?

Whenever I try to use the search function to find something specific, say a thread that used to be in the archive for example, the search function literally won't do shit. I'll enter some pretty exact info (ex. "Social Junker", "Homemade Alcohol III", "Year and older") and it won't return a single result. So I'll have to go about finding it some indirect way, which can be quite a pain in the ass and time-consuming.

Am I doing something wrong or are other Mods experiencing this?

I have a feeling that vB hasn't search indexed any of the threads from stuff imported to vB from UBB and as a result, doesn't search those threads and doesn't return results from those threads.

Just look at the dates of the search results. None that I've seen yet are from before when vB went live.

I wonder if Jeff is willing to fix this or if he has some other way of searching old threads now. I guess you could use google as long as they are indexing us.

EDIT:

An easy way to search the archives for now is to use google like so (or similar):

The problem, at least with me, is searching with keywords. If I search for posts made by User Name alone (e.g. "Rust"), I do get results. However if I try to search with both User Name and keyword, I get nothing.

I just fixed a similar problem on my copy of vbul. I was getting errors with mysql, actually telling me that there was no such column as "complete" (I think that was the name). I fixed it by adding such a column because the mysql query said "WHERE complete = 1". This did not fix it, of course because the default for all entries in the "search" table was NULL. Ultimately I fixed it with this statement: ALTER TABLE search ADD completed SMALLINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '1'

THEN I noticed that I still wasn't getting any results, so I went to the admincp, maintenance, Update Counters, Rebuild Search Index.

Not sure if that's the problem here, but it's worth investigating.
