Device VS Bomb
Reading in the "Welcome" thread, I noticed the Slang part - which I already knew but anyway...
Why does this forum want to use the term Device instead of Bomb? Essentially they are the same thing around here...unless a bomb is not..\
"A bomb is an explosive device, usually some kind of container filled with explosive material, designed to cause destruction when set off. The explosion of the bomb has to be triggered, usually by a clock, a remote control, or some kind of sensor, usually pressure (altitude), radar, or contact. The word comes from the Greek βόμβος (bombos), an onomatopoeic term with approximately the same meaning as "boom" in English. "
..right?
So why do you choose to butter the word up?
Just curious.

Re: Device VS Bomb
Bomb has negative connotations. The inference of pipe bombs, anarchist's cookbook, terrorism and all sorts of other influences, when all we really want to do is make a big noise, a bright flash and have some good ol' fashioned manly science fun.

Re: Device VS Bomb
Bombs cause destruction, devices try to minimize the chance of destruction. ie paper casings instead of metal

"designed to cause destruction when set off."
Thats the difference in this forum. We create "devices" that aren't meant to harm.

Re: Device VS Bomb
We don't try to cause death and destruction, we try to have as little as possible under the circumstances... Which is generally none.
AND this has also been done to death.

This isn't a debate about nomenclature...its a stupid argument about semantics.

LMAO, or a flying trash bin
We don't use the B word because, as has been said every time this thread is done, the stuff we make is specifically designed to be as safe as possible. The exact opposide is true for bombs, they're made to be as effective as possible at killing and destruction.

ROFL.
However, one could argue that the devices are bombs when they are used to destroy (or not) say... a padlock?

No, device can mean anything, but a "bomb" means that it's a device with the purpose of damaging something/somebody.
It *is* nomenclature.
