Default ubuntu 7.04 small issue/problem.

Hmmm i seem to have a little problem.

well, I'm new to Linux, and i recently installed the ubuntu 7.04. So i've spent the last few days working my way around the system, learning the terminal commands.. etc etc.

Then i noticed something. When i turn my computer on, it asks me for my user name and password (like normal).. i put that in, then it takes me to the desktop. A few seconds later, the screen goes black and it takes me back to the login.

I, again put the user name and password back in, and then it goes back to desktop and everything is fine.

It has happened about three times in a row, including just putting my comp on, now.

I don't know if this is a major issue, the computer seems to be running fine. I don't think i have done anything to have this happen, i haven't been messing with any of the system settings or anything.

So, im just wondering if anybody knew what this could be, or is it a common problem. and can easily be fixed?

note
I typed the usrname and pass correctly first time.

I don't think this was happening before, this problem has only just occurred.

You didn't really describe in any sort of distinguishable manner what "login screen" it takes you into after already logging in, I expect you are talking about the Xscreensaver lock setting.

When the screensaver goes active, from the system being idle, you are required to log back in, if in fact you have the Xscreensaver lock activated.

First, describe what login screen it takes you to, and second, find your screensaver properties menu and open it, turn off Lock screen when screensaver active box, and see if it still happens.

This isn't really a lot of information to go on, but check if your login is logged and see if you can get anything out of that. You can also check if you're launching some weird program at login thats screwing with you.

Hmmm. Well i turned off the lock screen active box. The problem still occurs.

To give you a better understanding of what login screen im talking about is this one.

http://tinyurl.com/yt42xo

The start up login.

I log in, few seconds, the screen goes black and takes me right back to exact same login, seen in the picture above. I log in again, and everything is fine.

Seems like i have to log in twice for some reason?

Although after the first login, it take me to the desktop. I see the desktop for about 3 -4 seconds, then it takes me back.

Thanks.

I hate to harp on Ubuntu, but this seems to be yet another useless "feature" of thier Linux distribution.

Go to System > Administration > Login Window.
Uncheck restart the Xserver with each login option.
Apply the changes and restart your machine or just logout of X and back in, if it still does it, definitely restart the whole machine, which shouldn't be neccessary.

Well, i went to the System > Administration > Login Window. And the " restart the Xserver with each login" option was already unchecked.

So i tried once more, (restarted with it being already unchecked)..and it happened again.

So, this time i checked it, to see if it would maybe prevent it. So i restarted, (with it being checked this time), and no it still happened. I kept it unchecked now.

Now, i also noticed..when i start it up after login ONCE the first time, if i keep moving mouse a little bit, the system freezes.

So just now, i turned off my computer and back on again (because it froze)...and after i logged in twice, i got this error..

"Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when attempting to locate the factory.Killing bonobo-activation-server and restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem"

The rabbit hole seems to be getting deep.

Any thoughts on what i should do, when i get this error?

Unfortunately no.
I can recommend that you switch to a different distribution however.

Well what one do you recommend?

I did some research and alot of people say that ubuntu is the better choice..(thats the reason i chose this one).

I've recently been learning the shell commands and i was gonna move on to shell scripting/programming..then move on to other program languages in the future. meanwhile learning more and more about linux in the process.

But everybody seems to have mixed thoughts on distros.

If you really care learning i would like to suggest Arch Linux.
Or Gentoo, if you don't mind compiling from source.
I would recommend Slackware, but Slackware's kernel is somehow outdated.

I would recommend Fedora of course.
Can you elaborate on what suggestions you are talking about why or what when people said "Ubuntu is the better choice"?

Do you have any specific examples of what technical information was actually relayed to support this theory?
