X Window issue
So I wiped my harddrive and put Fedora Core 6 on it tonight...i used the dvd and installed the packages i want and all that and it said it was successful. The only problem is that the XWindow wont work. When I was fucking with the live CD, it would tell me X Window wouldnt work, then it would try again, then after I would look at the two outputs or whatever they were, it would just all of a sudden load up. Anyways, isn't there something I have to do to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file or something like that? How do I make X Window work?

Re: X Window issue
hahaha, nobody can help you unless you give us an error message to work with. I have absolutely NO idea why xwindows might not be working. There are hundreds and thousands of reasons why it might not work. You're going to have to give us more information about your problem. The only thing I know about your situation is that you're trying FC and it "won't work." That = lol

Re: X Window issue
Your video card model is what is important at this point.
Tell us your video card model at least, without some information nobody can begin to isolate a problem.

Re: X Window issue
Sorry I left all that shit out. I realized that last night but the edit button was being so goddamned slow, I was just like fuck it.
There is no error that happens when I boot up now. Everything loads then it just asks to login and it stays command line from there, and Im not a huge wiz on any commands (I know cd, cat, echo...easy beginner shit like that).
I'm on a Dell Latitude D620 and the only upgrade that was done was an upgrade to 1GB RAM...that said I'm assuming my video card will be the one listed on the site, since I have no idea how to check it right now:
256 MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 110M with TurboCache5
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (Up to 224MB shared)
Hope that helps...my fault again

Post the contents of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf here in a
block.
It looks like you've described 2 video cards there.

Re: X Window issue
I'm assuming just the sections related to video, so here it is:
Code:
Section "DEvice"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "i810"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSEction "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
hope that helps

Re: X Window issue
That isn't what helps, just give us the whole file, and also it'd help if you ran the command lspci to show us your peripherals. You probably just need to find drivers, which is just about the first thing on any linux install.

Re: X Window issue
I do not agree with your method of just posting what YOU think is relevant. In any case, since you don't think the whole file is relevant, I will just tell you what you should do:
Add a Section "Device" for your nVidia card.
Make sure both sections for the Intel graphics card which uses the i810 driver has a specific BusID setting, and do this also for the nVidia card.
The specific BusID can be retrieved using "lspci", if you don't have that installed, search for it in your distribution's repository and install it.
For Fedora, "lspci" is in package "pciutils".. so "yum install pciutils" would install it, and it would be in /sbin/ as /sbin/lspci.
Likewise in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file you will need to modify your ServerLayout section to use either the Intel video card, or the nVidia card, or both, if you choose both, make sure to add a Section "Monitor" for the secondary card also and associate the two properly.

Re: X Window issue
my fault guys...here's the whole thing
Code:
# Xorg confituration created by pyxf86config
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Synaptics" "CorePointer"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayuout" "us"
EndSection
Section "InputDEvice"
Identifier "Synaptics"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
Option "LeftEdge" "120"
Option "RightEdge" "830"
Option "TopEdge" "120"
Option "BottomEdge" "650"
Option "FingerLow" "14"
Option "FingerHigh" "15"
Option "MaxTapMove" "110"
Option "VertScrollDelta" "20"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "20"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.3"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.75"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "i810"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubsection
EndSection
as for lspci, when I run it, I see the bottom portion that fits on the screen, but I can tell there is more to it and dont know how to see it (noobish, right?)

Pipe it to a pager, like more or less:
Press the down arrow until it scrolls.
q will quit, see:
