Best year for movies?
I think 1994 had some excellent movies
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_movies
So many of my favourites came out in this year
- Lion King
- Forrest Gump
- Speed
- The Mask
- Dumb and Dumber
- Ace Ventura
- The Crow
- Pulp Fiction
- The Shawshank Redemption
What other year can come close to this? Well 1994 was off the top of my head and so is 1999 with
- American Beauty
- American Pie
- Eyes Wide Shut
- Fight Club
- The Matrix
- Office Space
- The Sixth Sense
- South Park Bigger, Longer and Uncut
- Star Wars Episode 1
What is your favourite movie 'vintage' 1994 and 1999 for me

Re: Best year for movies?
I am sure someone can make a case for pretty much every year since 1990.
1997:
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Boogie Nights
Con Air
The Fifth Element
Gattaca
*Good Will Hunting*
Starship Troopers
Titanic
2003:
21 Grams
Bad Boys II
*The Last Samurai*
*The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King*
Lost in Translation
Old School
The Recruit
X2: X-Men United
2001:
American Pie 2
Behind Enemy Lines
Dogtown and Z-Boys
Donnie Darko
Enemy at the Gates
From Hell
Ghost World
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Jeepers Creepers
A Knight's Tale
The Last Castle
*The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring*
Monsters, Inc.
Ocean's Eleven
Pearl Harbor
Rock Star
Shrek
Training Day
Vanilla Sky
Zoolander
2002:
*28 Days Later*
The Bourne Identity
*City of God*
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Minority Report
National Lampoon's Van Wilder
Panic Room
The Pianist
Resident Evil
The Rules of Attraction
Spider-Man
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Super Troopers
Of course, with all these lists, there are tons of other films that would be worth mentioning, but I just included my favorites, and critically acclaimed ones.
Some movies are capable of carrying an entire year almost by themselves, because they are that damn good. I have put stars around the ones that really have that omfg factor to them. Movies that I can watch countless times, and still be stunned at how amazing they are.
From my random lists, not saying they are definitive, just random, and including your lists into consideration, I would say 2002, with 2001 being very close behind. The movie "28 Days Later" was the clincher for me.

Re: Best year for movies?
These past 2 years have had some pretty amazing movies, though 2002ish had some great ones as well. It's kind of hard to narrow that shit down to individual years. I'd say it's better to do decades.

Re: Best year for movies?
I'm thinking 1939.
Many great American films came out that year, including Wizard of Oz, GWTW, Dark Victory, Beau Geste, and Stagecoach.

If anything, I would think that would be a reason why it would be the best. Ancient Japan meets modern minded mutant turtles, you just can't beat that.
It's better than Denace the Menace.
