Default Repuataion causing trouble?

First off, I'm really sorry if this comes across as whining. I really dont mean it to.

Reputation.
There's been alot of bitching and whining about Rep in the suggestion box.
One poster seemed to get very furious with me, claiming I'd given him negative rep, he was sure it was me,said I'd signed it and everything.
The scary thing is, I hadnt given him any rep.
So either the poster is making things up, or someone is immitating me or giving posters negative rep claiming to be from 'yoyo'.
Either way, this is causing problems. Said poster has slowly started to post spam in the forum I moderate, and I check my rep points today and one says
"You're much more childish, I'm going to be a pain in the ass"

So someone playing around pretending to be me giving out negative rep, is effectively making me seem like even more of a cunt of a mod.

A few questions:
-Why does reputation have the option of being anonymous?
And I dont feel typing in a name after the comment is satisfactory,
I could go around giving people negative rep and horrible comments then sign it 'Euda' or something.
Is there not an option on the bbs so that next to the thread the rep was acquired from, the posters name could be placed?

-And how much does reputation matter, really?
If a poster gets a certain amount of negative rep, do they get baned?
What about mods? Does reputation matter to us? If we get a certain amount do we get de-modded or whipped infront of everyone?

Now that someone is imitating me and pissing people off, I fear I'm going to get an influx of spite and spam on the forumI moderate.
:(
Be carefull.

Ignore them. Chances are that if you check the rep was given doesn't have a red box next to it but a lilac/purple/grey (depending on browser) next to it. That means it comes from someone who's opinion don't count and it won't count towards your rep points.

I'm not a fan of the anon rep either but we've got it and it looks like its here to stay.

Never take it as any comment on your modding abilities which are, girl, awesome.

Oh and check your email in about 5.

There was a suggestion in the Suggestions Forum about this very thing. http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2000415

I think it would help to keep people from abusing the system. But I think it's also important to mention that nobody outside of Jeff knows how the system works. So our suggestions about how to fix abuse of the system may be undermined by something we don't know about - an unknown unknown. I'd like to hear whether or not Jeff thinks removing anonymous rep will help since he knows the entire workings of the reputation system.

Ha, I've gotten a few of those "grey points" and I was wondering what they meant. But how does the system determine which opinion counts and which doesn't?

It's based on reputation, you need positive rep to be able to give any reputation worth anything. Gray points are from people with negative or neutral rep.

I have a question about reputation as well. When you go to UserCP and you review the reps you've been given, I understand what the red and green ones mean, but what about the bluish ones?

Yeah, I had the same question. The blue/gray ones mean that the reps came from someone whose opinion doesn't count, so they don't influence your reputation either way.

I'm getting really confused here.
I figured that green rep meant it was from a mod. Grey/blue/turqouise/whatever rep meant it was from a regular,

and I also thought that red rep (of which I've only got one) must be negative rep from a mod?

Here is an example ( I appologise for my shitty Paint skills)
here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/raveyoyo/reputation.jpg)

I dont beleive a moderator would give anonymous negative repuation, so wtf is the red about?!

Jeff Hunter, Zok even, anyone who actually knows what this all means, any input please?

Red means negative reputation from anyone who has a certain amount of reputation points (can be anyone).

Green means positive reputation from anyone who has a certain amount of reputation points (can be anyone).

Gray/Blue/Whatever means uncounted reputation. This may have been either positive or negative, but the person leaving the reputation had such a low reputation themselves, that their opinion doesn't count towards your reputation either way. Gray boxes are completely meaningless towards your reputation points.I really dislike the anonymity of the rep system. If someone's going to give you rep, be it positive or negative, they should own up to it.100% Agree. Reputation should come with the name of who sent it, and should not rely on the honor system of users signing their name, because we've all seen where that leads.

I fail to see how this whole rep thing is any different than post count. For those users who aren't mods and gifted with a ton of auto-rep, this is just going to be a popularity contest, literally evaluating how people's input should be considered based on how much people like them personally or the content of their contributions. It seems very "untotsean" to link credibility with popularity, considering our status as a haven for the fringe.

I think it's a bit odd, now. Any positive rep is "is helpful", even if you're a regular with only one green box. I miss "should be listened to" too, gives us a cool sense of authority. "Raaaaa, heed our words, peons" kinda thing ;)

Basiaclly, I just wanted to check with everyone that really Reputation isnt a problem, and that is isnt a big deal, and it wont effect anything.

My concerns went more to the lines of if a few select posters have a vendetta against a mod, and that mod managed to rack of many lots neg rep, would they be de-modded,publicly ridiculed or locked into an Aim conversation with smarterChild for an indefinate time period.

*shudders*

I see now that that's not a problem.

It's really no big problem, sometimes I think reading the negatives are funny because most of them are just so absurd!

I've gotten negative reps saying "nigger", "coon", and (my personal favorite) "I'm going to kill you" for threads where all I did was quote someone or mention a song I was listening too!

I think most people have come to realize that one's reputation can't be taken at face value.

A mass negative-rep drive from every mod would be quite something to see, that would add up to -500 or something.

But I don't really think it needs to be punished, unless it's going on for a long time. The type of person who'd give out rep in somebody else's name is invariably the type of person with low/negative rep anyway, so it won't make much difference. And if people want to make a big deal of them, let 'em.

This is sort of off topic, but it's about the rep system.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I can't give rep to some people that I have never given rep to. It gives me "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to *who ever* again."

The first time I got that message I tried giving it to another member, but it gave me the same message. After that I gave a couple people rep and tried again. No luck.

Is it a glitch? Or something else?

FYI: My CP shows the name of the person who left the rep. I upgraded vBulletin today, so it may be a new template in the new version. Check your CP and see.

I really dislike the anonymity of the rep system. If someone's going to give you rep, be it positive or negative, they should own up to it.

There is no ability to give anonymous rep. If it wasn't displayed before, it was a display template problem -- the identity of the person giving the reputation has always been recorded.

Currently reputation is totally meaning-free. I'm still gathering data. Once I have enough then I need to analyze the data that's been gathered to see what, if anything, should be done with it.

Also, what makes you think that a negative rep that says "Cunt!" in the comment will count negatively towards someone's rep? Or if someone tries to do some rep-boosting (i.e. give me some rep and I'll give you some), what makes you think that either person will have an increased rep afterwards?

There are lots of ways to score the data...

Basically, once I get enough data, I'll write an algorithm that comes up with a total rep score based on multiple factors, not just a sum of the points given. Then you folks tell me if you see someone with a rep that seems completely out of line with their character, then I adjust the algorithms. Repeat until everyone agrees that the reps shown more or less represent how helpful or unhelpful someone is.

IF we get to that point -- where we all agree that the reps shown are an accurate reflection of reality -- THEN I might do something with the rep data. Until then, it's meaning-free.

I don't really care about seeing anymore than the last 5, though, because I get rep pretty infrequently, so I never "miss" any or anything. But for people that get repped frequently, or like to see a pattern as to who's repping you, then I can see how that would be helpful.

IT seems users take great delight in telling me what tey think of how I'm doing though. Oh including a moderator, "arx" gives me negative reputation for........... as far as I can tell, posting in 'his' forum, with the comment 'shoo little fairy'. How mature.

Also gotten a fair amount of negative rep for getting dates wrong when mentioning albums or other similiar ridiculous things. Then theres my favorite, the guy who apparently just follows me around looking for posts that he feels arent helpful. I dont mean flames or anything like that, just posts he feels I'm not going really out of my way to be the most informative interesting and engaging moderator on totse.

Funny enough it appears Jacktack has given him an infraction for threating physical harm.

Yep, cos he was stupid enough to make it a death threat. I'm sure it was a joke but that don't matter. It falls within the letter of the law so to speak. He threatened physical harm to member.

He did it to a lot of members (myself included), I was just pointing out that you beat every to the punch.

The infractions are very vauge..

One horrible poster in GPP randomly posted some shit I said about a year ago and that I thought was long gone.
I made a mistake and infracted him for 'spam' rather than for releasing personal information though :(

I was wondering what that was all about.

But there shouldn't be anything to woryr about, Aludin/straight from the congo/Harlequin Senior/whatever other name he is using is nothing but a troll, it's best not to worry yourself over him.

It's sick and horrible to do shit like that.

I mean, what's he picking on me for? What's he picking on anyone for?

Is this amount of spite and hatred normal when you become a mod of a new forum?

I haven't a clue, I've been a regular in AR&R since I joined back in 04 so most of the posters there didn't have a problem with me being modded.

Well everyone except for Aluding/Harlequin Senior.

I can see where you're coming from, but this is the internet. You can't let stuff like this get to you.

Heh that's true.
But remember I've gone from modding a nice quiet friendly forum with two battled hardened mods to back me up, and suddenly I'm in this big scary forum full of pre-pubescent little pricks who fear me because I'm, truthfully and honestly, better than they are* :D
