Gedo Senki - "Tales From Earth Sea" (2006)
It seems people here really love Ghibli films, but I haven't seen anyone talk about this one yet.
Released last year,, it is an adaptation of part of Ursula LeGuinn's Earthsea novels.
I think the big news of thi movie i that the director of animation was NOT the elder Miyazaki, but his son (or one of his sons) Goro (I think).
Personally I think its just great, whether made by the father or the son.. It tands up to the great Ghibli films like Nausicaa, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Of course its not a perfect adapatation of the book, but as far as an animated feature is concerned, I'm of the opinion that it IS nearly perfect. I enjoyed it as much as ANY Ghibli movies, and more than some.
Anyone else feel the same?

Btw the protagonist from Princess Mononoke, as well as the 'wolf princess' are both in it. ;P
(Anyone who has seen Gedko Senki will know what i mean)
And he' even wearing nearly the same outfit.
oh and the yak is back (more or less, without horns)

Actually, I was keeping track of it after it was first announced, but then I just kinda forgot about it and it fell by the wayside. I'll look for it now that you've reminded me, I'm hoping it's as good as miyazaki senior's previous outings.

I mustve missed this... I like those books.
I wonder what part the movie is based on? Theres 6 books, one of which is actually a collection of short stories...

The Farthest Shore
I sort of thought The Tombs Of Atuan, or maybe A Wizard Of Earthsea would have made a better movie, but The Farthest Shore definitely fits with the theme of Ghibli movies so I guess thats why he chose it.

And yes I at least think its as good as the elder Miyazaki's movies. Good news for us! He's got a movie coming out early next year I think actually, or maybe later this year.

Was the movie better than the books?
