Default Purifying Sulfur

I was searching for the reason why my BP had little to no power. One of the reasons, I suspect, is that my Sulfur is only 90%.

Would it work to just run a ton of water through it, to get rid of the 10% of additives? Sulfur is insoluble in water, so doing that would get rid of any ionic solutes. But how can I get rid of them if they're non polar? Dissolving Sulfur in toluene would probably dissolve the additives too then.

the 10% of impurity's in your sulfur should make very very little difference in your performance unless it is a strong fire retardant .. especially considering that for 100 grams of BP only 10 grams will be sulfur and 1 gram of that impure material although one gram can make a difference not so much as to impair burn though

i would focus more on your production

Almost NOTHING in chemistry is that pure, unless it's a primary standard. I wouldn't be concerned with it if I were you.

IIRC the impurities are usually clay and CaCO3. HCl could take care of the CaCO3 but I got no ideas for clay.

10% is fine... its gotta be your process and/or your other materials.

What kind of mill are you using? What kind of charcoal? Are you sure the charcoal hasn't been over/under cooked? Whats the purity of the KNO3? Are all the chems AF or near AF when you throw them in the mill?

Are you saying that the meal sucks? Have you made polverone with it?

Are you actually milling it? I kinda doubt you are like most people. It must be milled it's not optional or helpful its crucial its not real BP if its not milled it just mostly useless.

What he said. The chances of 1% by weight changing the power of your bp, that's a bit unlikely. Anything strong enough to do so would be known to you as I assume you baught your sulfur. Just by some that is supposedly pure off of ebay.

This is true, the difference between milled and half-assed bp is just amazing. Although honestly, for what most people are doing on here, the best bp in the world isn't really needed. I mean honestly, do any of you do anything 'big'? Yknow like 5lb fountains or some serious rocket engines? My guess is no.

So all in all, shitty bp is still fun.

When I get REALLY impatient I use a coffee grinder the bp fucking blows, but at least it's quick. But omg, such a mess T_T

I haven't made BP in a while, because of lack of KNO3. But I'm getting 12 pounds of it in the mail soon, so I'm gonna start again.

Anyway, when I did make it, yes, I milled it for several hours (not enough?). I was using pure KNO3, the 90% sulfur, and some charcoal called "Cowboy Charcoal" or something. So I didn't really cook the charcoal. Should I? Does it make a big difference?

It burned, just not that furiously. And what's polverone?

Is that charcoal briquette type charcoal? It can't be it needs to be charred wood charcoal. Maybe try a bit longer in the mill more or less media. If it is briquette coal then that would probally be the reason, they put stuff in there like clay and stuff to make it burn slower. Look up pulverone I think it is un-milled charcoal.
