Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
When i boot from the newly downloaded, burned cd image i get a menu, there i can choose to install ubuntu.
When i select that, it loads some stuff, then a progress bar goes back an forth and then my screen goes black.
When in the menu i first choose VGA options and change them, and then try to install it, i get past the black screen but after a while it tries to start the xserver, which does not work.
What did i do wrong here?
I md5 checked the cd image and burned it twice.

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
Ubuntu's LiveCD and standard discs have alot of problems.
If you can, try downloading Debian instead, or get the Fedora LiveCD with an installer here: http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=1997540

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
But there must be a way to get it to work...
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Ati Mobility Radeon x1400

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
I have never had a problem with any Ubuntu live CD.
This is probably your problem: Is your graphics card on-board, or is it PCI? If it is PCI, you probably just need to unplug your monitor from that card and then put it on the onboard card. The video will be shit, but you just need that for installing. After its on your harddrive, boot with the onboard video, install graphics drivers, and change the X config off of the onboard card. You can find out how to do that on the Ubuntu wiki or on the forums, though the wiki page for your card has all the info you'll need, probably.

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
Use an older version of the live CD or a different distro entirely.
Or maybe you can install it from a text based installer somehow? Then install the correct driver for the x1400 afterwards? I dunno.

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
It's a laptop, so i can't unplug the monitor.
The PCI address in the xserver config thing is correct.
And how would i install it text-based?
It seems like you live-boot it, and that on the Desktop should be an installation. But when i boot textbased, there is no file there...

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
Try the Fedora LiveCD with installer in my first post to this thread.

Re: Ubuntu 7.04 installing problem
Jeez bio, this is what I mean. He's asking for ubuntu help and all you'll do is say "install fedora core". I mean, really, would it be such an indignity to support an OS other than the one you personally patronize?
Alright, here's how you do it. When you're on ubuntu, run this command:
It'll have output like this:
Code:
00:00.0 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation C51 Host Bridge (rev a2)
00:00.5 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation C51 Host Bridge (rev a2)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge (rev a1)
00:03.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge (rev a1)
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge (rev a2)
See that last line? Thats my graphics card. Just change the PCI value in xorg.conf to match whater YOURS is, then just startx.
Edit: That number, 00:05.0 is the PCI thing, keep whatever syntax your config file has though.

It would be no problem at all if the "other OS" didn't deploy outdated software. It isn't all about fanboyism, to your surprise I'm sure.

It doesn't matter if its outdated, its still user choice. He wants support on X, as someone in a position to help him a great deal, I think its a bit off to just say "go get Y."
