Default Should I be apologizing?

I have two female housemates who are both very overweight/obese. I am the lightest person in the house at 70kg/~150lb. I have however been significantly overweight in the past so I have some understanding of how it feels.

A few weeks ago I was part of a conversation that got onto their weight issues and I basically said that their appearance would be improved by losing some weight. I said it in response to one of their comments, and in as straightforward a manner as I could, while trying not to imply that they were unattractive in their present state. Sort of "you're fine how you are but you would look better if you lost a few kg" (not my exact words).

They got very insulted, and have spent the time since trying to make me apologize.

These are girls who watch "The Biggest Loser" and complain that they can't lose weight while eating a meal of ice cream and crackers; as in the whole tub and box.

I'm finding it difficult to understand why they cannot either accept that they're overweight and get over it, or do something about it.

Basically this is causing a lot of tension in the house. I was friends with one of them before she moved in and we got along great, now she's constantly bringing it up and fishing for an apology. The other one just keeps glaring at me.

1. Should I apologize for causing offence? I still think I'm right, so it would just be to ease the tension (I wouldn't really mean it, and that goes against everything my mother told me when I was 5...).

2. Is there a safe way to tell a girl it wouldn't kill her to drop a couple of kilos without having her go nuts? I don't plan to do much of this but it couldn't hurt to have some idea of what to say. There is no safe way way is there...?

I figure this fits best in S&A considering it's dealing with the effect this has had on household interaction etc. I considered SG and B&M but decided that an answer to my second question might save one of totse's gallant lads from castration at a later date.

Women take offence to everything, they're probably in their pms week. Swallow your pride and apologise, even if you don't mean it.

You have to ask yourself this. What do you want more, your integrity, or peace?

You shouldn't have to apologise. You were telling the truth that they don't want to have to think about. Deep down they know eating a tub of icecream won't help them lose weight, BUT they'd rather just complain about it and blame everybody else. They're probably used to people sugarcoating remarks about their appearance to them.

You could apologise for offending them, but don't apologise for what you said. Like in a "Sorry I offended you, but it's true" kind of way.

And no, there's no safe way to tell a girl to lose weight. Ever. I guess it's best to just try to lead a good example by eating well and asking if they'd like some and asking if they want to walk somewhere with you, etc etc. You know, generally not being a fat slob (No offence to them)

Just complain about how fat you are then people will think you're stupid. Cmon, girls do it! :D :D :D
