| Technophiliacs & Technophiles The Technophiliacs forum is for discussing any and all forms of tech and other types of social backwardness. Including discussions of strange home-brewed hardware technology. Where to get good tools. How to make fiberglass molds. Computer hardware and software technolgy, including operating systems, applications, networking, hardware, CPU's, disk drives, and other geeky things. Viruses and Artificial Life discussions. How to write HTML. End user tools discussions and support issues. Gating the Internet with other nets. Strange Drive Cable
So..
I have a Roland EM-50 Keyboard (an auto-accompanying look at all the buttons music keyboard that happens to work as a nice synthesizer) with a floppy drive that I was naively hoping to replace with a ZIP drive I could use fundamentally as a hard drive. Problem is, it uses a really weird cable I can't find any mention of anywhere on the interwebs. On first glance it looks like an ordinary PATA cable, but it in actual fact has 31 pins, arranged in two parallel rows of 16, with the second pin on one row missing. Does anyone know what type of cable this is, and if I'll be able to get/make a connecter to an ordinary SCSI or PATA drive? The keyboard was released in mid-late 90's I think, and the floppy drive's (it's Panasonic) model number is JU-257A166P. Needless to say, Panasonic deny ever manufacturing this drive. Any ideas?

The reason I'm wondering about SCSI is I found some sort of mini SCSI-based cable with 32 pins for use with floppy-sized drives; the connection however is shaped completely differently. (SFF-8484 is it's specification/type/whatever number).
EDIT: I can't count. It's (my one, not the SCSI thinger) a 33-pin connector with two rows of 17 each.

Reason: EDIT 2: According to Google it's an ATA variant. I'll check more.

Yep, as-normal-as-it-gets floppy drive cable and interface.

Re: Strange Drive Cable
Is there an ATA or SCSI adaptor for these things? I can get a zip drive from ebay easily enough, but AFAIK they only use PATA or SCSI. Is the connection abstracted enough for this to work, or is the circuit board hard wired to work with this particular floppy drive?

Re: Strange Drive Cable
That connector has 34 pins, just like a regular FDD cable; is there a twist of some wires on one end? You'll need a SCSI controller card to use a SCSI device. A Floppy drive controller is a floppy drive controller is a floppy drive controller.

Re: Strange Drive Cable
No there's no twist in the cable but as I understand it, that's a hacky little thing to make master/slave switching easier, and as the keyboard would never have the need to have two drives on the same channel it's not an issue.
What I'm asking, is if there's an adaptor I could plug into the back of another PATA drive that would let me connect it to this floppy drive controller. I don't know if this is possible, as the two controller specifications might be completely different and incompatible.
