Default Re: good emo/bad emo?

My opinion is that GREEN DAY is not 'emo' at all.

I mean SERIOUSLY, what the hell? Green Day pretty much defined 90s punk rock, and their music is still very similiar - though far more complex and developed!

I dont understand why you call them emo at all.

Of course, many of the socalled punk fans on &totse probably are going to say "OH NOES YE HATH BLASPHEMED IN THE NAME OF THY LORD PUNK ROCK!".

But, theyre wrong. If you asked every person in the USA "IS Green Day punk?", the vast majority (who had actually heard of them) would say "Of course!".. Green Day DEFNINED punk rock for a whole generation (1.5 generations actually) of music listeners. And their music has always been damn good. Great pop songs they've always written.

As for the rest, I guess I agree. The ones you call "good emo" , I still dont like, but they are better than the others you mentioned. One thing I've never undernstood (and always bothers me for some reason!!) about Panic At The Disco, and many other popular emo bands... is this obsession with calling all males "boys".

Rock music used to be about testosterone, about being manly, having fun, flexin your muscles, hell. Rock and roll, rocking and rolling, just the very name says "sex". But so many emo bands talk about the characters in their songs like the're little boys. What is with this? It sound relly bizarre, almost disgustingly (in a kiddy porn kind of way) perverse when 30 year old 'men' (suposedly) are singing about "boys".

That very popular Panic At The Disco song (I couldnt tell you the title), constantly refers to teh protagonist in the story as a "boy", but tlks about how he fucks better, looks better, kisses better, than the rest.

when I think "boy", I think "little boys". and then I think "little girls".

im sorry maybe I'm being silly,,but this whole thing really bothers me. I hear it in other emo bands.

I find nother wrong with crying every now and then, being sad, being a little depressed - it happens to all of us, hell, its the 21st century, even superman cries. And Captain America is dead!!! But still..... after we get it out of our system, can't we whipe our tears away with steel wool soaked in ammonia and/or bleach, and get back to being MEN????

WHO'S FUCKING WITH ME???? YEEE HAWW/!!!

Really though, I can fix this problem. All I need...

Is a rooftop.....

And an AK-47!!!

I hate calling anything 'emo', I really fucking hate that word altogether. It defines such a broad genre of idiotic music and people these days. Anyways, some good 'emo' bands you might wanna check out are

Mineral
Sunny Day Real Estate
old Jimmy Eat World
Rites of Spring
Ataris.

And I would never ,ever call Brand New emo because I really adore their music, but it seems like that's what people tend to label it as these days. Check out every single one of their albums.

Weezer, At The Drive-In, and The Mopes are the only ones that I can think of at the moment but I'm sure there are more.

I think it's kind of strange that bands like Husker Du and Rites of Spring were the first to be labled "Emo". These bands sounded angry and reckless rather than whiny, effeminate and immature, which is what most people automatically think of when they hear "Emo". I'm not a huge fan anyway, despite my username being a Fugazi song.

There is no such thing as good emo.

And if Green Day once defined punk rock, then they have fallen a long way into a damp shit filled abyss.

I like emo music. I'm not what you might call emo, really, but I'll admit that I listen to the stuff. Panic! at the Disco is one of my favorite bands, and I love AFI, Motion City Soundtrack, My Chemical Romance and bands like that.

But I like punk too, and rock and metal.

Green Day is infinitely cooler than you.

--that P!atD song "about how he fucks better, looks better, and kisses better than the rest" is "Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off." Love it.
