Smoothpyrogen: I think it's illegal to have unregistered weapons anywhere, regardless of whether the law states it's legal to posses one that's registered.

No. God damn it. Again with the "registered."
Write this on the blackboard one hundred times so you knuckleheads get it:
There is no mandatory gun registration in the United States.
I don't care if you heard it twenty seven thousand times on Cops. I don't care if you heard it
from the cops. There is no centralized method, law, or need to register guns in this country. Period.
Some
states have registration laws, but they're in the minority. If your state has a registration law, the penalties will go along with that law. Otherwise, there is the paper trail of the form 4473 that indicates that you (or whoever) originally bought the gun, but beyond that point and barring local law it is
none of anyone's business, as it should be.
You have to move the registration on your car if you sell it to someone, or if you destroy it, or if you just give it to your daughter on her 16th birthday. We take this as a given, but you're doing all this registration bullshit with the state, not the federal government. Therefore, whatever happens with the registration of your car is handled according to state law, and if you break that law you'll be tried in state court under state penalty.
People understand this, but for some reason when you change "car" into "gun" they become instantly stupid.
