| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

The Cuban Embargo: A Cold War Relic
The embargo is pointless. It is currently being upheld because Cuba may have a government that is demonized by most Americans. If anyone was actually serious about bringing Democracy to Cuba, they would do it through open trade.
As you can see in Iraq and Palestine, Democracy isn't suited for everyone. You can't complain that the Palestinians elected Hamas, because that was the will of the people. Also why is spreading Democracy seen as so noble? While, if any other political ideology tries to spread it is seen as evil. Politicians don't give a shit about spreading Democracy, its capitalism that they want to spread. Every motivation eventually comes back to money.

I for one admire the economic systems of these "evil" countries. I think it would be nice to live somewhere free of monotony and a McDonalds on every freeway exit.

^That doesn't seem like a well thought out enough reason to support communism...
Anyway, the embargo definately is bullshit. Sure Castro is corrupt and somewhat a dictator, but the government before was just as shitty, if not more so considering that now, the impoverished majority are a bit better off than they were before. The only reason the embargo exists is because the previous government had an open market and was more beneficial to the U.S.

You admire their economic systems? At the best it is widely inefficient. At the worst it is slavery. I know having a McDonalds is really cutting into to your style, but I don't think its too hard to live with.

Considering they are a dirt poor nation under embargo and they still have a superior infant mortality rate compared to America's I'd say that yes they are indeed better off now than when they were just another bananna republic.

It is also hypocritical. We trade with China, a communist state, yet we don't trade with Cuba. Once Castro dies I believe the embargo will be dropped.
The situation in Palestine is totally different. It is against US law to provide funds to a terrorist organization, which Hamas is; it isn't an embargo.

I wasn't pointing out the economic dealings of US and Palestinians. I was pointing out that Democracy doesn't work out for everyone, and its ironic when people complain because the country elects someone we don't like.
I should clarify the statement. I was merely expressing my distaste for gross commercialism and capitalism which makes it difficult for unique small businesses to flourish. The work of Ron English, the guy who was in Supersize Me summed it up pretty well with his parody of Van Gogh's Starry Night.

Do you think that in communist states like Cuba unique small businesses can flourish?
