Understanding Metal Gear Solid
Don't read this if you have not completed Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2. This thread will most probably spoil the entire series for you.
I, like many others am a massive fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, but some parts of the storyline confuse me a bit.
I'm going to ask some questions about both MGS1 and MGS2 (I've completed both many times, but want to understand them more before going onto MGS3), if anyone knows the answers please reply. Also, any additional info would be great!
1) What happens to Meryl after MGS1? After you save her in MGS1, you don't hear anything about her at all afterwards. Or is it just a 'use your imagination' thing?
2) Why won't Liquid Snake die? You kill him multiple times, but he still lives. In the game he states 'as long as you live, I shall live' (or something), and that just doesn't make sense.
3) Who is Revolver Ocelot? Is he a member of/working for the Patriots?
4) I thought (maybe I assumed) Foxhound and Next-Generation Special Forces were the good guys, why do they become/are they terrorists?
5) Where is MGS3 set? I believe it's set before MGS1 and MGS2. Is it the 'Outer Heaven' story that can be read about in the MGS1 book, or something completely different?
6) What the hell is going on with MGS2? The storyline confuses the hell out of me. Can someone please try to explain it to me? So I can then ask about anything that doesn't make sense to me.
7) Does Richard Ames work for the Patriots? When I read one of the Shadow Moses articles on the MGS2 'Special' section, I can't remember if it said Richard Ames was a member of the Patriots or not; but he seemed to have some "power".
8) Why did Ocelot choose to have Liquid Snake's arm? Out of all the fucking arms he could have had, why did he chose Liquid's? Is there any point in that? Also, why does Liquid have control over Ocelot when he likes? It makes no sense.
9) What other MGS games are there, and do they relate in anyway to the main MGS1, 2 and 3 storyline? Basically, would it matter or not if I didn't play them/would you recommend playing them.
I can't think of any other questions right now. I'll add if one pops into my head.
Thanks for any replies.

Re: Understanding Metal Gear Solid
1) There are two endings to MGS1 (depending on whether you survive the torture bit), and in one of them meryl dies. Therefore to tell you what happened to her afterwards would make the assumption that she lived, invalidating the other ending. So yes its a "left to the imagination" thing.
2) Just like solid snake, he's a hardass motherfucker. Besides, villains often survive ridiculous feats in movies, why not a videogame?
3) Don't know
4) Don't know
5) Don't know
6) Me too. A good storyline has a twist or three like MGS1, that was a great story. MGS2 had about 17 twists and it was a rather retarded story by the end. Added to the fact that I often spent more time watching cutscenes than playing, I just gave up with the story and decided to finish the game.
7 + 8) See 6.
9) Not sure on this, I think there two games on the super nintendo and the sega megadrive, generic sidescrollers, nothing too special. The storyline wasn't as indepth as the later games, and is summarised in the backstory material supplied with MGS1.

3) He's a Russian general. I'm assuming you haven't yet played MGS3 so I wont go into detail.
5) It's set in a remote jungle in Russia, during the Cold War era. It doesn't have a lot to with with the previous games in terms of the main storyline, although it does give some closure with the characters.

Re: Understanding Metal Gear Solid
Thanks guys.
I have another question, but it's about Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Does this game contain remade versions of MG1 and MG2, and is it worth getting to understand the story more?

Re: Understanding Metal Gear Solid
1) there are two ending is mgs 1, one where she dies, the other where she lives, but in the upcoming mgs4, Meryl is alive and apparently plays a large part in the story
2) Just to add to the story i guess, and also snake and liqud are clones of the same person (big boss), so there another connection on some other level between them
3) Play MGS3, find out pretty much everything about him
4) play MGS4 again, all the way though and pay close attention, in a way there are good guys, but they also fund terrorism with the support to make Metal Gears, and to fund all the baddies and shit
5) Set in Russia During The Cold War, near Chernobyl for some parts. Bassicaly gives the back story for Revolver Ocelot, and Big Boss.
6) Once Again play MGS2 all the way though. The Oil Tanker Incident, and everyone involved with it, (all the badies) was an exact replica of MGS1, they tried to train raiden to become the ultimate soldier, a solid Snake replica. But that all goes shitty when Octagon and Snake get in the way to get raiden out of there and to rip up some metal gears. Kinda shows how foxhound could be the badguys.
7) play MGS2 again
8) I dont really remember why he chose it, but in the begging of MGS2 when snake is confronted by Revolver Ocelot, he says something about it.
9)nah, all the ones for psp i believe are just joke card games, there ones for game boy advanced called MGS Ghost babel i think, it has a really cool story to it. besides that see if you can get early Nintendo MGS
and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence dose not have a remake of MGS, and MGS2, its just MG3 with online play and a few extra things

In reply to 5 - Are you kidding? It has almost everything to do with the main storyline/previous games. It shows the life of Big Boss, and what the three clones were made from. It shows how Revolver Ocelot came to be... and how FOXHOUND was established... actually I think that was showed during Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake, but you get the point.

Re: Understanding Metal Gear Solid
This thread is proof of how shitty/stupid the MGS storyline really is. Especially the second one, god, what an abortion of a "story".
I still think MGS is a great game, and as convoluted as it's story was it still turned out pretty good. It had some great villains too, some of them very memorable. Unfortunately, MGS2's story destroyed everything good about the first one, and left us with the crappiest enemies ever.
Seriously, we went from Psycho Mantis, Revolver Ocelot, Ninja, Liquid Snake, Vulcan Raven, and Sniper Wolf, all some of the greatest villains ever to grace the world of gaming, to a fat guy on Rollerblades, some dumb bitch who thinks she's lucky, a bisexual "vampire", a ninja who amounts to nothing, and a geezer who looks like he's on life support. Every last boss in MGS2 was a major step down from their counterpart in the original, some of them embarrissingly so.
Everytime I think about MGS2 I can't help but get pissed off. Such a waste.

Re: Understanding Metal Gear Solid
MGS series would have been so much better if they cut the over the top crap. That and made the camera a bit less shit, it was really painful to get into 3 after playing Splinter Cell
Oh and playing the third one doesn't require any knowledge of the previous ones so go for it
Say, anyone else read the Last Days of Foxhound? The art is pretty shit but it's pretty well written imo
