Technophiliacs & Technophiles The Technophiliacs forum is for discussing any and all forms of tech and other types of social backwardness. Including discussions of strange home-brewed hardware technology. Where to get good tools. How to make fiberglass molds. Computer hardware and software technolgy, including operating systems, applications, networking, hardware, CPU's, disk drives, and other geeky things. Viruses and Artificial Life discussions. How to write HTML. End user tools discussions and support issues. Gating the Internet with other nets. If your computer is better than anyone else's computer, you are required to post a message explaining why. You'll probably be wrong, especially if you're a Mac or BeOS user, but post anyway.

Default Laptops... So many brands, so little money.

Alrighty... I couldn't find an old thread with my particular situation in the search, so I'll make my own.

My parents are probably going to Saudi Arabia to teach at the American University for a year, while leaving me and my twin brother at home, in the states. If they do that, they've agreed to buy us, each, a Laptop.

Since they're buying 2 Laptops, the price tag could get very high... which leads me to my question.

What's the best gaming laptop for a price range of 1-2k (for each laptop)...

I'm sure they won't be "The Best" out there, but we just need something "decent".

I, personally, just want a laptop that can run Final Fantasy 11, and can take one of those Cingular: Wireless Internet cards... to enable me to play anywhere (especialy in class ).

My brother wants it to run Crisis (but not sure if that'll be possible).

So, Any opinions? Should I buy a pre-made one, or a Semi(or fully)-Customizable laptop, and if so... What hardware? I kind of fallen behind on what's "good" these days.

Any input is appreciated.

I know that www.ibuypower.com had a laptop which had two 7950GT's (I think) in SLI. It was 1gig Vram. But I do not think they still have it, if they don't you should still check them out because they have low prices for what you get. 15-25% cheaper than Dell or HP.

Those the best this forum has to offer?

If so, think I should get a cheaper laptop, and upgrade it... or just buy a base laptop for a higher amount?

...Is there a difference?

As I suspected they no longer have the SLI laptop.

How does this look to you? http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/c...r.aspx?mid=233

Those are just a couple, you may wish to rummage through those sites some before you buy anything though.

Laptops are not very upgradeable, especially when it comes to processors. Any upgrade you can get would probably be the same price/more expensive than the base computer. I would go with buying a nice laptop and not upgrading it. But of course it is up to you.

The latency will be too high unless you're in a UMTS/HSDPA service area.

Stay away for an SLi laptop, not a great idea

turionX2 or core2duo either are fine

you want at least a 7600Gs or a x1550 preferably a 7900Gs

large screen is easy on the eye's true bright is also a good idea

Raideon or GeForce Graphics cards?

(Probably butchered the spelling of both...)
