Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

Default Intercooler for 360?

I was reading through the xbox support forums, and it seems in the past few days several more people are having the same problem with their consoles as I have with mine (still waiting for the box to arrive to send to microsoft for repair).

Anyway, one guy puts forth a theory about excess heat damaging the av port on the back of the xbox 360. I know mine used to get really hot, but I never thought much of it since it never seemed to cause any problems. Now I'm considering investing the $20 or so in a cooling system. the one that seems to be the most widely used & recommended is the Nyko Intercooler. I was wondering if any of you guys had any experience with this, or had any relevant thoughts.

It seems that a $20 investment would be well worth the hassle of another dead 360. Too bad microsoft doesn't include the necessary cooling equipment out of the box. Sad, sad business.

The trade off for having more fans and better cooling is a louder system. But that's a small price to pay for keeping your console in good condition.

Angry Re: Intercooler for 360?

So I'm probably going to get an intercooler and try to find somewhere to put my 360 vertically (after I ship my 360 for repair, and get it back in a few weeks. fuck), since I've heard that vertical alignment helps keep it cool also. I'm still pretty pissed about all this, and honestly the only thing keeping me from switching back to sony is the stupid controller on the ps3 (I don't want a 3rd party one. that's retarded. fuck you.)

I miss GRAW2.

DO NOT BUY AN INTERCOOLER. The intercooler causes the red lights of death because it takes away power that the 360 needs. I've had the shit happen to me twice already. Look up on google a little deeper. There's pictures of a guy who needed to use a screwdriver to pry the thing off when the bad connectors in it melted the intercooler to the system.

5char. I have several friends (read idiot accomplices) who don't listen to me and the reports I mail them and have broken several systems.

Plus, 33% is The Truth when it comes to xbox facts.

Unhappy Re: Intercooler for 360?

The intercooler myth causing red lights of death is complete bullshit.I've used one for over a year horizontally and vertically without problems. Those 3 little fans consume all of what, 5 or 6 watts?

That's like saying huffing raid can't kill you because you've done it lots of times. just because you haven't blow up doesn't mean others can't. Lots of people have and lots more people will.

BTW, those 5-6 watts mean a lot to the 360.

A lot of people swear by the intercooler. I've heard that the death lights are caused by overheating causing the solder around the GPU to separate. And yeah I've seen pics of where the intercooler melts onto the 360, but it would seem like that was due to a faulty intercooler (and Nyko replaces your 360 if that happens) and is not an issue with working intercoolers.

I unplugged it to dust it. I'm sure that had nothing to do with the failure because the colors started getting screwy (exaggerated blues and greens) before I unplugged it do that. The exaggerated colors were described by three other people; the ones that ignored it and left their system on lost their picture too.

The problem seems to be heat damaging the av port.

I'll look into this more before I buy any extra cooling things, but it still seems to be a viable option.
