Yachting
This summer, I hope to take a Yachting trip with the girlfriend (a good way to ensure sex for a month). Seeing as I live in Toronto, we'd have to go up the St. Lawrence and out into the big bad ocean. Now, considering a normal sized yacht (30+ feet) with rations for at least a week, how would you suggest I go about doing this? I haven't done the necessary planning (weather reports, wind patterns, currents, etc) but I was planning on a trip from Canada to UK, down to Italy, then back home. Could this be done in a month, given conditions of 10km/h throughout the trip, no unnecessary stops for repairs, etc.
No, I haven't planned everything out, it's in the basic stages. Ideas?

Re: Yachting
Err I don't think that's quite going to cut it. Canada to Uk is around 3000km I believe, but more realistically it would take at least 20 days.
My real question is, where the fuck did you get a yacht? I'm assuming you know about sailing but you don't sound like you have a lot of experience, and now you want to cross the Atlantic?

Re: Yachting
It really depends on the weather etc. I would give it more than a month on any ocassion, though.

Re: Yachting
I don't have a yacht. I have a couple of possibilities. I have minimal sailing experience (ie, I know which side is port and which side is starboard). I have been thinking about joining the navy sometime (Canadian), and then sailing after I've gotten the experience there. My other options are:
1) Rent/Lease one for the summer months.
2) Take the money I've been saving to buy a condo and buy a yacht.
Looking at it again, it would be fastest to just go Canada -> Italy and back home than to make a square.
The only reason for the trip is to take someone I love (or love to fuck) and spend a month away from the business of the city, relaxing with only booze, cigarettes, and our naked bodies.
EDIT: And seeing all the sights along the way.

Re: Yachting
Seriously, if you're going for that reason alone, don't.

So what would be a good reason to yacht across the ocean? I enjoy the tranquility, and I'm a water-lover. I enjoy it a lot more than say, hiking across BC, or snowboarding or any other activity. Not to mention there's so many things to do along the way; SCUBA, visiting remote, unmanned islands and beaches, etc.

Re: Yachting
Really, sailing across the ocean isn't a walk in the park. the contrary, it's very dangerous if you're not an experiance sailor.

All right. I've toned down my dreams. I'll go yachting on the Huron for a week or two this summer...

Re: Yachting
Yeah...sailing accross an ocean is pretty serious business, and you said yourself you don't have a lot of experience.
I'd stick to a lake or something.
