Anyone have any detailed stories of using any of those rifles.??

Go with a 10/22 with a 3-9x scope. Great, cheap fun.

Thats what I have plus a 25rd and 30rd mag.

Ruger 10/22

+ Can be customised to hell and back
- Semi automatic so you'll burn through ammo quicker and could learn bad shooting habits

Savage

+ Accurate out of the box
- You might not like the look

M38's only cost 10 cents a shot to shoot, while .22 is half that. I think that with '54R you get a much bigger (thus harder kicking) bang for your buck.

get a 10/22, Hogue Overmolded stock, and a high quality barrel, such as a Tactical Solutions. With a decent scope mount, you're looking at around $450, but it'll be seriously accurate.

The Savage, for all of 100 bucks, will give you that accuracy, but its ugly and mine is prone to jamming when it gets really hot. I suppose you're talking about the MKII, right? I haven't tried the 64 autoloader.

The M38 is fun, but I would start with the M91/30 if given a choice... Interordnance often has M38s, M44s, and M91/30s for around sixty bucks.
