So my grandma just got a ticket....
for speeding.
The cop said that she was going 50 in a 35mph zone. What puzzles me about it is that he said that he was going the other way on the road and clocked her from there, while he was moving. This goes against all knowledge i had of radar guns (little) on the fact that they time how long it takes for the radar to bounce off an object and come back to the gun. If the cop were going the other way, wouldn't this cause it to get a false reading, saying she was going faster than she really was? Any help would be 'preciated.

Re: So my grandma just got a ticket....
I'd assume that they would have the radar gun automatically check the speed of the car and remove that from the total. Assuming of course it was a nearly-straight line, it should be accurate.
Tell your grandmother to show some flesh next time!

Contest it, everyone knows senior citizens drive at least 10kph below the speed limit.

Re: So my grandma just got a ticket....
The radar units in the cars I drove(reserve deputy) were wired into the vss. It took our vehicle speed into consideration and gave an adjusted speed of the target car both coming at you and going away.
The actual radar guns didn't have that, but they were only used while sitting still.
The tricky part is figuring out the speed when the target car is at an angle. The cop car being on the slow lane and there being 6 or so lanes between him and the other car. There's a formula and chart to do that and it can be tricky, but in the end it comes down to who the judge trusts more.

Its nothing more than the sine of the angle of displacement. Knwing that the sine of any angle never exceeds a factor of 1, she was going either 50 or FASTER. The only way the radar would match her speed is if the cop car was in her lane with an angular displacement of 0, every other angle would give a slower speed.
I do believe you are screwed. But if you want to contest it, demand that the calibration certificates be shown. I think they have to be calibrated every two years to be legal, but may vary depending on what state you are in.

Every two years? Around here it's every day.
It shows that you have little knowledge of radar units. they can clock you from the roadside, from the front, from behind, and while heading the opposite direction. Let your grams get her cumuppins, I'm sure her insurance isn't that damn much in the first place, anyway.

Re: So my grandma just got a ticket....
^^He's right. There's a tuning fork type thing that you hit in front of the antenna.
That calibrates it and it's the daily maintenance. The officer has to be certified to use that unit, but it's a given that they are and as far as I know they don't expire.
Granted I'm not an expert on the matter since it wasn't full time, but I never heard of a unit being ripped out of the car and sent off for calibration.

Hire a lawyer. Traffic tickets seem to be the only thing that they are worth having around for anyway.
The lawyer should be able to:
1. get the fine reduced
2. No points on driving record (No insurance increase)
3. No driving school
4. No needing to go to court
