Bible As A Textbook?
http://www.cnn.com/2007/EDUCATION/04....ap/index.html
This angers me. Where the hell are the Koran courses? The Torah? other religious texts? The government has no place brainwashing our youth with christian beliefs. The Representitive even goes as far as to imply the bible is "historically accurate" and, I found this even more shocking, classes like this are already offered in highschools. Seperation of church and state is officially dead.

Re: Bible As A Textbook?
It should be treated as nothing more than a piece of historic literature when it comes to school. I wouldn't mind writing a summary for English class and whatnot.

Shut up you dumb liberal.
You'll see what's "historically accurate" when you're burning up in hell.

You might be misunderstanding what is meant by 'historically accurate'.
Meausered against other ancient texts, parts of the bible actually do very well.

In the places where they offer these classes do you think parents would let their kids take a Koran class?

ya, except the fact that theres only a few historical points in the entire thing. You find more historical facts in a grade 5 picture book.
I dont really care if theres elective theology study. Why do the christians get everything, it should be a course going in depth of all major religions, plus brief lessons on past religions. Thats something I might have taken in high school. Right now that option is only in college.

Re: Bible As A Textbook?
The government was originally based on Christian beliefs, that's why they would have a class intended for only the bible. I would hate it if I had to take that class, but I also believe that it would convert many more to Atheism. It would cause many people to doubt the statements made in the bible.

Fun fact: The majority of the founding fathers were not Christians. Most of them were either Deist or Agnostic, IIRC.

Re: Bible As A Textbook?
you forget this is a Christian country not muslim!!! Just because were suppose to have religous tolerance doesnt mean that isnt! Thats a Christian aspect to be religously tolerant (not saying that we made it up or nothing just simply stating)!!! The seperation of church and the thing about not letting a religion have preferance in government is your misunderstanding!
1. Seperation of church and state was made soley for the purpose of not letting the CATHOLICS take over the government like they had done in other countries!
2. Not letting a religion take preferance in gov. means dont let one religion have more rights than another or opres another one but that doesnt mean this isnt a Christian country!
this IS a Christian country and we are the majority! And its not restricting anyones rights to practice thier religion freely if they only teach the bible in class you dumbfucks!
ps. im not quite sure if that second one was the other thing about religion in our government rules or poicys or what ever the hell it is but it was the only thing i could think of that it could be but i do remember i know the arguement to what ever it is! lol

So, Christianity gets the right to have their holy text and ideas taught in school while others are left out in the cold?
If the Christian bible is taught in class, it would inevitably be taught to students of other religious backgrounds, since they are children and highly impressionable, I think the "Thou shalt have no other god before me" will confuse the hell out of them. This will cause a religious identity crisis, so to speak. Doesn't that affect this individual's right to practice his religion freely?

I wouldn't mind either. It would probably prove more engrossing than most other texts I had to study in highschool.
But what's the likelihood of it being treated completely as as a fine piece of lit in Texas?

Likelihood - slim, to none. People with faith-based agendas would find a way to use it out of context. Especially in the South. But just think - the Christian private school system (currently a HUGE source of income, and it's not all non-profit) would likely go belly-up in the process. Why would parents pay to have their children brainwashed in a private institution, if they could get it for free in the public schools?
It should be treated as a fine piece of literature and studied like Shakespeare ... strictly for the written stories.

We used to read it for the 'dirty' bits when I was a kid.

Christians being in the majority does not make this a Christian country.
1. Seperation of church and state was made soley for the purpose of not letting the CATHOLICS take over the government like they had done in other countries!
The Establishment Clause was written for the purpose of preventing the US from becoming a theocracy under any religion. Perhaps you should study a little bit of American History?
How many Catholic theocracies can you name?
2. Not letting a religion take preferance in gov. means dont let one religion have more rights than another or opres another one but that doesnt mean this isnt a Christian country!
No. Just no. Not respecting a religion simply means that the government cannot promote or inhibit any religion. Allowing the display of the 10 commandments on public property or prayer (led by administration or representatives of the school) at public schools or school sponsored functions, etc. are examples of respecting a religion. .
this IS a Christian country and we are the majority! And its not restricting anyones rights to practice thier religion freely if they only teach the bible in class you dumbfucks!
The United States is NOT a Christian country. It does not matter that Christians are in the majority. The US is not a theocracy(regardless how much the fundies wish it to be so).
You do not even understand what the Establishment Clause entails. You have no clue as to whether or not anyone's rights are being restricted by the teaching only the bible.
ps. im not quite sure if that second one was the other thing about religion in our government rules or poicys or what ever the hell it is but it was the only thing i could think of that it could be but i do remember i know the arguement to what ever it is! lol
Incoherent blather.

Re: Bible As A Textbook?
"you forget this is a Christian country not muslim!!!"
There are a lot of Christians in your country, that does not make it a Christian country. Your constitution has safeguards built directly into it in order to prevent that. The Treaty of Tripoli directly states that the United States is not a Christian country. You're making things up.
"The seperation of church and the thing about not letting a religion have preferance in government is your misunderstanding!"
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
How EXACTLY does that mean "The United States is a Christian country"? How is that a "misunderstanding" as you put it?
It seems as though that to many Christians, "religious tolerance" means "let us have total domination over every aspect of your society, including your government."
